I hear you, however I don't think it's true that EVERY attraction has to have a story. I mean what's the story of the Matterhorn Bobsleds? It's really no more than the name implies - a bobsled trip down/through the Matterhorn. Likewise California Screamin is supposed to be a classic wooden coaster at a seaside amusement pier. It quite simple, obvious actually, what the ride is supposed to be. Therefore, I don't think Screamin is really an attraction that needs to be saddled with some elaborate back story for it to be fun or entertaining.

No? I could be wrong. This isn't fact, just speculation. I also agree that not all rides need a theme. I think Screamin' is just supposed to be a throwback to the old wooden coasters that used to be on the boardwalks at the beach. Like the one that used to be at the Pike in Long Beach.

The inspiration came from a film called Third Man on The Mountain. Walt Disney visited Switzerland when the movie was being made and decided that he wanted his own version built in Disneyland. Fantasyland didn't get its European village look until 1983. "I think Screamin' is just supposed to be a throwback to the old wooden coasters that used to be on the boardwalks at the beach. Like the one that used to be at the Pike in Long Beach." Exactly. Within that context it's fine to me, however the queue is pretty lame for such a major attraction.

There is absolutely nothing going on in that queue...just concrete and railing. There are pyramid-like umbrella things that shade you from the sun, but thats about the most colorful thing in the queue...the station is nice, but they can do better. The architecture of the building compared to TSMM's station building is pretty pathetic. thats what id like for the screamin station.

What you said about Matterhorn how it doesn't have a story, I wasn't saying that every attraction has to have a story, but nice theming. Look at that mountain! It's a very nice theme. Everybody knows you are supposed to be bobsledding because it's in the name! California Screamin' on the other hand, nobody really knew you were supposed to be surfing. All I'm trying to say is that they can make it look just a little better to make it tie in with the new Victornian themed pier. The queue is just so boring for a big attraction. But the key fact is that they have the room to do it! Matterhorn on the other hand doesn't.
Originally Posted By Dr Hans Reinhardt "Yes, but where would they fit a queue building???" I don't really think that the queue needs to be fully enclosed in a building of any significance. Maybe it could be a tour through an abandoned surf board shop or repair facility. I don't know, but I see no need for an incredibly elaborate to be engaging or entertaining.

Thanks for the info, Hans! I also like the idea of the Screamin' queue being a tour of an old surf shack. They could do something similar to Grizzly River Run. It's a standard queue but they made an effort to at least make it look like an outpost for a rafting company.

Thanks for the info, Hans! > If you've been to WDW, DL's FaL prior to 1983 looked much like that. Sort of the medieval "tournament tent" look. It still had a European look (though not nearly as good a look as today), and the Matterhorn always looked good as a backdrop.

The Jungle Cruise queue or GRR. That's what i was thinking in my head, I just wasn't detailed enough. I think a jungle cruise-like building where it weaves around corners (and Screamin's would definitely have to use a second story) where little bits of scenery and props are scattered here and there would be perfect for Screamin'! But make it look more like TSMM or just an old surf shack.

You can tell that money was spent to make it themed. Screamin, however, it just a sterile and efficient place to hold the queue. It's got stucco walls and a roof.
