I know MK's version went through several revisions, so perhaps Shanghai is getting one of the longer ones

I think that once they remove the scaffolding and the real color is visible, it will look a little more like the regular castle. Of course, having all the construction equipment everywhere only adds to the Sagrada Familia look

They are quickly disappearing as more of the city gets redeveloped, but I'm sure that anyone from the region or is familiar with it would recognize them. Then I see in the photo's caption that they deliberately incorporated Shanghai architecture in the design. Well, it worked on me.

In addition to making for neat public space within the hostel itself, it was really neat to walk through the hutong on our way to and from everything each day. After a few days we started recognizing people, and really started to feel like we were becoming part of the neighborhood. If the Shanghai neighborhoods have a similarly welcoming vibe, I certainly understand why Disney wanted to recreate that look. It's basically the Chinese equivalent of Main Street USA

Having been to the Expo, there were all sorts of problems with it, but also a lot of really great things too. It makes me that much more curious to see how this whole thing turns out, since it still seems like a big gamble to me (especially the financial side, where Disney seems to be at the Chinese government's mercy)

I guess Disney was also forced into the HKDL mini-land additions, but this seems to be taking it a step further, and establishing that format from the beginning. Given the huge amount that Disney has invested (and bribed local officials with) in this development, it's amazing that they don't have more control over it. Any sort of investment is always a gamble, but usually companies want more control over their finished product when they're spending such huge amounts

However I'm not sure if it will look so good in reality. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Originally Posted By FerretAfros >>I have to believe that it's a first generation concept piece and not meant to represent what the final project will look like. Right?<< My impression has always been that it looked like an architectural rendering rather than concept art. The layout and materials will probably be pretty accurate, but the image does nothing to show how guests will interact with the space. Although we often look at concept art for details of the design, the best images are ones that show how people will use the space; Herb Ryman's old artwork was great at highlighting this The image looks like it's cold and sterile, likely because it wasn't intended for people who care about how the space will be used. These sorts of images are quite common in plan reviews, construction documents, and meetings with permitting officials (though since it's entirely within Disney's site, I doubt they would particularly care in this instance). It just doesn't have any of the life that most concept art has
