At this point I think it's called "managing expectations." The party controlling the white house has lost seats in the midterms all but twice (IIRC) since FDR. The question then becomes how many seats.

With the way the media is talking, if the Democrats lose a bunch but still control both houses (or even one), it's going to be seen at least as a semi-"win."

Exactly right - but, for obvious reasons, this is being treated like a big secret.

It's most galling when the right wingnuts talk about "repealing healthcare" - ain't never gonna happen and they know it, but they say it anyway as blatant pandering to the ignorant. And the ignorant think that sounds wonderful - let's repeal healthcare! Let's let insurance companies decide who does or doesn't get treatment, let them collect payments and premiums for years, and then drop people the moment they get sick. Great idea!

While we're at it, let's provide $700 billion in tax cuts to millionaires too! Sign me up.

And why are we regulating these multinational corporations like BP and Goldman Sachs? They never hurt anybody. We're just interfering with their ability to create jobs.

And who are these ivy league swells that are trying to solve this nation's problems? We need people who haven't got a clue about finance, bonds, regulation, taxation, and passing legislation to run the show - you just can't trust those smartypants.

The fact that this cynical strategy even works is too depressing to contemplete.

Have you never seen a NH primary?

That was probably the first place to exhibit the phenomenon consistently, but it's spilled into all elections now, pretty much.

And gad, you're right about healthcare repeal. Couldn't pass a Senate filibuster, and in the unlikely event it did, couldn't possibly get two thirds of both houses to override a veto. So one of the centerpieces of the "pledge to America" is a promise the Republicans can't possibly keep--and moreover, they know damn well they can't keep, but make anyway. The cynicism is overwhelming.

Nationalized Healthcare? Since when do we have a national health system? The last time I looked in my wallet I still had a card from my FOR PROFIT PRIVATE Health insurance provider and my doctor works for a private practice and the pharmacy where I buy my prescriptions is also a FOR PROFIT PRIVATE business.

But what really fries my bacon is when I see seniors who have their heathcare paid for by the government (Medicare) bitch and complain that they don't want the same benefit for other Americans. Many of these people even proclaim to be "christians" but the truth is they are more concerned with feathering their own nests than being their "brother's keeper".

It's simply despicable and disgusting. Of course these so called "disciples of Christ" have no problem with the country spending untold sums in fighting imperialistic wars of occupation. THAT'S OK, even if we have to borrow the money.

Sometimes I feel as if I'm living in Imperial Rome. I wonder who will be our Visigoths?

Top it off with a majority of voters who seem to have a Chicken-Little mentality, too lazy or just plain stupid to educate themselves to the facts, poised to restore power to the party of the rich, by the rich and for the rich.
Optimism in this country is spread about as thin as the American dollar.
All empires crumble, it is a mathematical certainty that ours will too.

And that's the myopia that makes the whole thing work.
