We're debating if we should talk much about this as a lesson to our kids as my daughter has NO idea smoking caused it. We don't want the little girl to have this fact swirling around the school as she has been through enough.

Do I have to explain the second-hand smoke that was in a bowling alley for so many years before the laws began changing?

My grandparents used to babysit me during the day when I was around 5 or 6 and I used to swipe my Nan's Pall Malls and hide them so she couldn't smoke. That used to drive her up the wall. The only time she'd use saltier language was when they'd sit in the kitchen and play Canasta. I also remember for various holidays, getting my dad and my nan gifts that would help them stop smoking, like fake cigarettes with special filters. None of which actually caused them to stop smoking. My dad smoked 3-4 packs a day always switching between Marlboro's and Salem 100's. He always knew which brand he had last. I spent years growing up where the smoke from his cigarettes would get in my face. Typically, we'd sit adjacent from each other in our living room and the ashtray would be between us. I used to tell him that I was going to grow up and become a lawyer and sue him for all the damage second hand smoke was doing to me. Man, was I ahead of my time.

I have never smoked cigerettes in my life. Some smokers don't realize how inconsiderate they are to others who have difficulty breathing. I guess their addiction is beyond their control and understanding.
