I remember candy cigarettes and bubble gum cigars quite well. My parents strictly forbade them. (The whole "appearance of evil" thing.)

We did play with toy guns, though (go figure). The funniest thing I ever saw in a toy shop out here in Lala Land many years ago was a little boy who picked up a toy gun, only to have mommy immediately take it away, explaining, "We don't like guns." She gave the poor kid a toy broom (!) to play with instead. As soon as she was out of sight, he hoisted it up to his shoulder, took careful aim, and started muttering, "BANG! BANG! BANG!"

Umm, actually my friends did this a couple of times in high school. It was mighty hilarious to watch someone's face the first time they did it. I was never stupid enough to try it, but they managed to convince quite a few people that it felt funny in a nice way. However, their faces made it quite clear that there was nothing nice about that burn.

That could have been my mom and my brother. We never had toy guns and I never wanted them, but my brother was known to "shoot" with sticks or bananas.

I too am a lifelong Non-smoker but had many many candy ciggs, and bubble gum cee'garz!

One of the only things I ever won as a child was a Halloween costume contest in 1973. There was a boy winner and a girl winner. I was a clown and she was Raggety Ann. First prizes were a set of Cowboy Guns with belt and holdsters and a baby doll.

    I was so proud.
