I also found it to be depressing in its caricature of homosexuality. In the publicity pieces, the film claims that it is using satire and humor to expose homophobia in society. However, the depictions of Bruno in film are so steeped in gay stereotypes and rooted in the idea that being gay is 100% about an obsession with sex acts. I don't think you have to be a homophobe to be offended and turned off by that behavior.

Plus, it was evident that about half of the films scenes were staged and scripted when the whole thing about the schtick in these films is that it is supposed to be real-life encounters between the comedian and his unsuspecting foils. It's not nearly as funny when it's a bunch of actors pretending to be surprised by this behavior.

Take for example the scene when he passed the Fred Phelps group. There could have been a lot that happened there but nothing.

And does anyone think the ending was scripted or was that for real? Because if it was real, I'm surprised those two made it out of there alive.

Pretty much where I am, except I'm not sure Cohen can be funny if he isn't trying to make a fool of someone else.

The character Borat was so seeped in stereotypes and rooted in the idea that being a third-world foreigner is 100% about an obsession with gypsies, Jews and sexism, yet it has a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

And who could forget his turn as Pirelli in Sweeey Todd being Johnny Depp's first victim.

He has a bit of talent but my problem with Bruno was the same as the one I had with Borat: It would have been a funny, tight 30-40 minute short. But wears REAL THIN and lost most of its humor as a full feature movie. Just didn't care after a while.
