How funny. In the year 2000, the mugs I got didn't say anything about being good only until the end of my stay at the location they were purchased, but my mug from this year mentions both those things. Just STOP TRYING TO JUSTIFY YOUR STEALING, Skellington. You're a thief - quit trying to justify your thievery and lack of morals and ethics, please.

Later I found out Mickey was real. Some people will try to convince you of anything. Maybe they need to get guest to enter into an ethics agreement when they purchase a refillable mug. The first printed notification next to the handle I think was in 2001 when they changed the size at least none of our big mugs have anything on them. We don't need them anymore because my darling child bride only drinks diet pepsi now, so we lug those from home. Now that they have coffee machines in the rooms the three cups I brew there in the morning are enough for me. The mugs are worth it, at least before, just as a souvenir. My darling child bride still drinks exclusively out of her big WL mug. I guess we will have to buy one of the new ones just because it is different. I think Skellington88 is really a good young lad at heart, just a little brash. He just needs someone to give him direction in his life He needs a mentor.

The rest of us honest people who play by the rules always end up paying for you people who always have to try and "get over". This includes lying about a child's age to get a lower ticket price or stuffing your purses and knapsacks full of goodies before you leave a buffet so you can have a snack later. To make matters worse you are the type of people who usually have the most complaints about all the injustices in the world.

You all know how I feel about refillable mugs, and for those of you who don't I'm only going to sum my beliefs up in a few words : STEALING IS STEALING. Now that we've crossed that bridge, I'm going to reiterate what vbdad, Labuda and others have already said. It really ticks me off when people justify reusing their mugs becuase they "can't afford to buy new ones each trip." As vbdad said, it's $12 bucks a mug! You've spent probably thousands of dollars on a Disney vacation and you can't put out another $48 for a set of mugs? If they didn't offer the mugs, you'd spend A LOT more on cokes than $48 a family. How can you justify not paying for something because you "can't afford it?" I can't afford a $350 Coach purse, that doesn't give me the right to go in there and yank it off the wall. And as vbdad said, don't give me the baloney about stealing cokes not affecting Disney because it's a big company. Why not steal some inexpensive souvenirs from the Emporium? Disney won't mind, they're a huge company, they won't feel it. Stealing is stealing - it doesn't matter if you "can't afford it" - that doesn't justify it in any way. I'm pretty much over the fact that people reuse refillable mugs - if a CM told you to do it and you can sleep at night, fine. However, I don't like it when people justify their lack of morals by saying that it's ok because they can't afford it or the company's so big they won't feel it, or whatever. That's a $&#^!# excuse!

Every mug that's reused is done at places where I've been told literally dozens of times by dozens of CMs (some managers too) that it's OK. I like saying 'I'm a proud soda thief' because frankly it gets a rise out of some folks (no one here of course!) but I don't believe it for a second. If I ever thought I was stealing I wouldn't do it. But, at the same time, I'm not going to give Disney's Carousel of Policy the benefit of the doubt because maybe the CMs were either all wrong, all mistaken, all just didn't give a damn or all were so unhappy at their jobs that they wanted people to steal from the Mouse (even if it's a product Disney pays pennies for ...at some point they paid nothing at all). I know that's a patently absurd conclusion from someone who's bought a dozen mugs since 1996. So, I get a laugh at threads like this. I doubt anyone at Disney is losing sleep over mug use/abuse. Yet it gets some folks so up in arms. I wish they'd drop the whole thing for a few reasons, most notably the fact that having kids (and adults) traipsing back and forth to get refills is a huge reason why hall carpeting in most resorts is filthy. Now, I have a dilema as I'm about to stay at a resort (BW) I've never bought a mug for as I've only stayed once before. I certainly won't be using a mug from another resort there. But I'm not thrilled with the idea of buying one of the generic ones either. I think I'll just pick up a two-liter bottle of Coke and that and water will do.

I have a lot less problem with that than someone who reuses mugs because "they can't afford to buy new ones" or because "Disney is so big they don't miss 20 cents." I DO think its a question of morals. Is it OK for me to circumvent an ATM because I don't feel like paying the $3 fee? After all, Chase, Citibank, etc. won't miss $3 - they're huge companies, so why should it matter? Is it OK for me to take a cookie from a package at my local mega conglomerate grocery store? It's just one cookie, that won't hurt the bottom line. I can't get up in front of a classroom of kids in the fall and present myself as a role model if I sit here and condone people stealing because "they can't afford it." In the end, it's a very small leap to "I stole these $150 shoes because I couldn't afford them." I firmly believe that every action, no matter how small, has larger consequences. I purchase a new mug every time I go to WDW because I have always been told that the mugs are only good until the end of you stay. Now, it's even written on the mugs. To fly in the face of that is stealing.

Originally Posted By danyoung >To anyone who steals the soda: Why do you feel like Disney owes you soda for life?< If I may interject. The main person on that side of the debate is Spirit of 74, who was told when he bought his first mug 87 years ago that it was good for life. He has since been told by may CM's that he can indeed use that mug to get the soda for free. I don't have any problem with this special situation. It's the people that buy a mug, knowing that the specific deal is for the end of their current visit, who then bring the mug back on subsequent visits and continue to drink for free, just because no one specifically busts them on it. That's stealing.
Originally Posted By hopemax > He has since been told by may CM's that he can indeed use that mug to get the soda for free. Is free really free though? Disney has had many options for manipulating costs. They can charge for soda with a line on the receipt that says Drink. Or they could put no charge on the receipt, but everything else you buy from the food court costs a quarter more. So I chaff a bit at the notion that is has always been stealing. There are ways Disney could have advertised "Free soda for life" without actually giving anyone free soda but letting people think it was. There are advantages to letting your customer think they got one over on you. Do we think that valet parking at the Deluxes was truely free all those years, or it was included in the price of the room? Is transportation truely free, or is it included in the price of your ticket and everything else?

Now it's even printed on the mugs.

And as others have said, the money on the soda is really such a tiny, tiny item that it's not worth offending the guest, even though by the letter of the law they shouldn't be getting the soda for free. I'm sure Disney is perfectly happy with letting some people get 2.5 cents worth of soda per day for free, as long as they keep on spending $100 per night or more for a room. (BTW, the math earlier in this thread was extremely bogus. EVERYONE doesn't get the free soda, and the actual cost outside of paper cups and straws is fractions of a penny per glass. Not that that makes stealing right, of course.)
