I'll just say that, good decision or bad decision, I'll miss jon's voice here. We got into it sometimes (just recently on a DL topic on the capacity of the Lincoln theatre's waiting room - who'd think something like THAT could cause a mini-brouhaha?) but he made LP a more interesting place and I hope he'll be back someday.

It doesn't work. A friend of mine created a Disney Bulletin Board when a group of us felt that the moderating on The DIS was too heavy handed.

We were all into this freedom of speech thing and decided that there would be NO editing or deleting of posts. That people would be allowed to speak their mind however they wanted. My friend made me co-administrator of the board and we thought we were on our way to posting nirvana.

It was a monstrous mistake. You cannot believe how absolutely vile people can become when there are NO rules. It got so terrible (and you know if RoadTrip thinks it was terrible it was pretty terrible) that we did something we said we would never do. We deleted posts.

Well, that went over about as well as banning jonvn did. There was a huge uprising resulting in a mutiny. My friend (who was the actual owner) decided that things were such a mess that she gave up and turned ownership of the board over to the rebels.

So my good Spirit, neither option works very well. I've been there, done that. As I've said before, I think the moderating at LP is the best of any Disney site I've ever been involved with. It is more lenient than almost any place I've been, while at the same time getting rid of the stuff that is truly over the line.

Regardless of what people say, I think most of them know darned good and well why they were banned even before being told. You try to walk that line too closely and you will eventually cross over it, and then you are gone. People know when they are getting close to that line. If they don't, they are too danged oblivious to be here anyway.

To anyone who thinks they could do better at moderating, I would love to hear your plan. I once thought I could do better too.

    I couldn't.

Ever read the talkback sections on Aint It Cool News during the Star Wars Prequels? The most common theme "George Lucas raped my childhood."

Make WE an "at your own risk" zone, complete with a disclaimer like:

To all who come to this obstreperous place, caution.

WE could be where the gloves come off and it's a cyber street brawl(but no porn postings, or profane language --there has to be some regulation). Keep the rest of LP wholesome, innocent fun though.

It's easy RT. Say someone ticks you off over in Disney Dining by saying some fighting words like "the California Grill sucks" well you and the offender just take it up in WE and go at.

Hey, it would be great therapy to air out some grievances and then go back over to Disney Dining and be civil.

    Great plan, no?

Porn postings and profane language weren’t really big problems at the site (although as usual the C word would provoke howls of rage).

What pushed the whole thing over the edge were absolutely SAVAGE attacks on other members of that board and members of other boards. It truly got worse than you can imagine.

I think mawnck probably knows what I'm talking about.
