I understand the appeal of having "hard and fast" rules. For example... "The first time you post one of these twenty words, you will be banned for 21 days." "If seven independent LP'ers complain about your posts within a period of 30 days, you will receive a written warning." And a zillion more, to cover all bases. THAT would implement some consistency around here. Consistency is clean. It's simple. It's easy to administer. It's also impersonal and brutal. Important judicial systems -- parents, for one, and the US courts, for another -- recognize that individual personalities and circumstances deserve some weight when considering how to deal with transgressions. Using this "case by case" system is messy. It can lead to inconsistencies and -- as in this case -- loud protests about the individualized decisions that are made. But when the judges are honest, the "case by case" system is far and away the most humane and fair approach. I am VERY grateful to Doobie and the Mods that they are willing to take on the effort, criticism, and soul-searching that comes with using the "case by case" model. It would be so much easier on them to use an inflexible rules-oriented approach. As to the argument that: "the current ways are [not] working and they're going to destroy a wonderful community of fans here ... too many good people and great contributers are just saying 'it's not worth it'"... (A) The number of posters who have announced their departure from LP recently is tiny. As a percentage of LP posters, it's miniscule. (B) If I recall correctly, those departing did not cite LP Admin's policies as a reason for leaving. I do remember "real life" and "less time on internet chat boards" being cited. (C) People come and go from websites constantly. This is not to say that it's not very sad for the LP community that, for example, TDLFAN and Spirit of 74 won't be around here. But it's a fact of internet life that people move on. And their moving on is not a de facto indictment of the site on which they formerly posted. <<I don't think the current ways are working>> I so disagree. I think that the tone that Doobie created for this website and the manner in which the Mods handle the discussion boards work VERY well to create and maintain a community that is impressively diverse, respectful, and personable.

That's greatly diminshed. Of course that's just my opinion. I just can't get as involved as I once was. Personally, it almost felt like I was kicked out of a family.
