Leave the beginning and the end alone, but anything in the middle would be fair game for a swap-out. That way, there would always be something new to enjoy, but it would be the "good old MSEP" that everyone loves.

Maybe I'm confusing it with the Return to Oz unit, which was destroyed in a fire shortly after it premiered (which would make me think that it was around the same time that the iasw float disappeared...coincidence?)

That thing has been around long enough to surpass being "old", "outdated", and "vintage" and is almost to the state of being a "classic". I guess the Sunshine State couldn't live up to its name (though I have doubts about the mirror theory in CA too)
