(a fact I was painfully reminded of re-watching the films on BluRay last year)

Originally Posted By skinnerbox <<As someone who saw the very first showing of Star Wars at a theater in 1978-79'ish...>> SW screened in 1977 at the Coronet on Geary Blvd. That used to be one of my favorite theaters in San Francisco, before it was torn down for the Goldman Institute on Aging's new senior care facility. Is that when you saw it?

And yeah. The acting in the first three was never a selling point. Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing were old pros, but Mark Hammill, Carrie Fisher and even Harrison Ford and Billy Dee Williams look stilted and uncomfortable. That said -- I found the three 'prequels' to be just terrible. Sure, the special effects were dazzling, but who cares? The scripts are dreadful and tedious -- the backstory that was put together is slipshod and downright silly, and when actors like Ewen McGregor, Natalie Portman, Liam Neeson and Samuel L. Jackson come across as boring -- one has to point the finger somewhere.
