Abrams Already Regrets Not Directing ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ “He read it and said something he never, ever says,” Grunberg, who plays X-Wing pilot Snap Wexley in “The Force Awakens,” told The Washington Post. “He said, ‘It’s so good, I wish I were making it.’ He may have said something one time on ‘Lost’ with Damon [Lindelof], but I never hear him express regret like that.”

Nearly half (49.1%) of its total has come from domestic audiences. It's true that there are several places where it hasn't opened yet (including China), but that's a huge anomaly in the box office totals. The only other top-20 films that are over 40% domestic are The Avengers (41%) and Dark Knight Rises (41.3%) The last couple days' proceeds should push it into #4, ahead of The Avengers and Furious 7, and Jurassic World at #3 certainly seems within striking distance ($1.669B). Titanic is more than $600M away from the current total, which seems questionable, and I'd wager that Avatar (which has nearly double TFA's worldwide gross) is pretty much out of reach at this point http://www.boxofficemojo.com/a...e/world/ So many films in recent years have focused on the huge tentpole/blockbuster concept that can easily be shown around the world. While this is clearly profitable approach, I wonder if TFA's balance will cause more of a shift toward domestic audiences in the future, or if the rest of the world is just adopting Star Wars more gradually than in the US

There are 11 of them: Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Spain and the UK. Then I took their Force Awakens numbers and divided them by their Avatar numbers. Far and away the winner is the UK, which has already grossed about 89% of its Avatar numbers $134 million so far for TFA, and only $150 million for Avatar. Considering how much connection Star Wars has to the UK, not a surprise. Also TFA is performing very well in Germany and Australia where TFA has pulled in 50% of Avatar's total in Germany and 48% in Australia. France is at 38% and Brazil is at 36%. I'm not sure what the percentage has to be to represent performing well against Avatar. Considering, its now only it's 3rd week, I'm guessing that collecting at least a third of Avatar's numbers is decent. So the possible underperformers are: Italy at 29%, Japan at 27%, Russia at 17%, South Korea at 22% and Spain at 23%. The big one there is Russia. Avatar brought in $117 million, so for TFA to only have brought in $20 million, that is a disappointment. Of course, the largest foreign box office totals for Avatar did come from China at $204 million. Hong Kong's total is 39%, I don't know if that provides any sort of indicator for how well TFA might do.

And don't get me started on how much Star Tours pissed me off (check my topic in the Tokyo section for that rant).

I saw it a few weeks after it came out and was one of the last people I knew that saw it. I wasn't there for Avatar, but since Titanic was so popular, I'm not surprised Avatar made even more money.

I was comparing 3 weeks of TFA release to total run for Avatar. In three weeks TFA has earned $21.2 million in Brazil. Avatar after week 3 had $20.9. Due to inflation Avatar would be "more successful" but not by a significant margin.
