Traditionally it is made with one shot of espresso, and the small amount of added milk was the "stain." However, later the "mark" or "stain" came to refer to the foamed milk that was put on top to indicate the beverage has a little milk in it (usually about a teaspoon [in fact, the Portuguese word for a macchiato is "pingo," which means "drop"]). The reason was for the baristas to show the serving waiters the difference between an espresso and an espresso with a little milk in it; the latter was marked. In the United States, "macchiato" is more likely to describe this variant (in contrast to latte macchiato), and thus arises the common confusion that "macchiato" literally means "foam," or that a macchiato must necessarily have foam. (As the term "macchiato" to describe this type of coffee predates the common usage of foam in coffee by centuries, the staining "agent," the additive that lightens the dark espresso, is traditionally the milk, not the foam.)

    WOW!

That is really impressive. I am HOOKED on Pike Place Venti, with 2 creams and 4 sugars.

I probably take a year off my life for every one I drink. I used to be hooked on HOUSE but it seems that Pike Place has replaced it now. Sad, I still love HOUSE.

Hot Americano is good too but if they water it down just a tiny bit too much, its awful.

I will say that I HATE that one that starts with a V, but I can't remember the name, oh yes, I think its called Verona.

My favs are the hot coffees, I dont go in for all that other stuff. My very best most favs are
    House
    Columbia
    Pike Place
Black Apron...anyone ever had this one?

We're Starbucks junkies in our house. My daughter and I go together at least once a week. I sometimes go in before work and got myself into a nasty apple fritter habit. Of all of the stuff I gave up, including bread and potatoes, that damn fritter was the most difficult to give up.

I usually order a double tall peppermint mocha (sometimes I get a bigger size). Lately, now that I'm eating less sugar and it's summertime, I have an iced, double tall breve latte.

I don't mind using thier coffee lingo but if I order something different than my usual, it takes me about 5 minutes to stutter out my order. LOL

    1. Extra Hot refers to the temperature, and yes... It's hotter than if I didn't order it that way. I do it so it'll be nice and toasty 'til the last sip. (Funny side note... One morning, the price was higher - the girl thought I said "Extra SHOT." *LOL* :)

    2. I can't imagine them ever being out of iced coffee unless they were literally out of ice. But I'm no expert either, so... ;-)

    3. Macchiato... I have no idea. *LOL* Other than there's no chocolate in it, so it wouldn't be a Mocha. The Caramel Macchiato is espresso, milk, sweetner and caramel. It's blended when ordered hot; the shot is floating when it's iced - more for aesthetics than anything - until I stir it.

As far as the Americano, my dh gets iced americanos all the time, and orders them without water so they don't taste watered down. So it's just ice and espresso (he adds a little half-n-half). Maybe try that.

How do you DO that? On the rare occassions I get a cup of coffee, I have to let it cool for, oh, about a day and a half before I cautiously take that first sip.

But I see so many people in Starbucks get their coffee and immediately take a big swig (my wife included). It's hotter than freakin' magma!

EXTRA hot??? They must brew it wearing a welding mask.

    She honestly had no idea.

Another patron / guest said that they heard that it was going to be mostly the "licensed stores" such as the one's located inside Target and Book Stores and the like. At first I was afraid "My Starbucks" would close but then I quickly realized there are three more that are on the same stretch from my house to my kids' schools. Surely at least one of them will be left open.

I never sip it immediately. I have about a five minute drive from Starbucks to work; I walk from my car into the building and to my desk; set up "house" for the day (firing up the 'puter, put my lunch in the 'fridge, etc.) THEN I take the first sip, which is still perfectly piping hot, but not scalding by then. Yummmmmm! :)

If it got it at the regular temp, it would be pushing close to the lukewarm stage and that is totally UNaccetable! ;-)
