I live in a small city in NorCal. When I moved here 5 years ago we had 2 Starbucks. Now we have 6 (with another one on the way) including one inside a Target. The town hasn't really grown in that time either so why the 300% expansion???

I imagine there are at least 600 cities like mine across the country that can live without one of their Starbucks.

I just hope they don't decide to close the one near my house. My wife has done all she can to make sure they are turning a profit there.

It's that fine line between convenience vs. overkill, isn't it?

But I'll say this for Starbucks -- for a company as huge as they are, they are VERY generous with local community groups. They've donated huge amounts of coffee, plus cups, napkins, condiments, to several charity and community groups I've been involved with. And they're totally cool about it -- they make it convenient and easy, no hoops to jump through. You ask and generally they can help. So, they're a good neighbor.

DVCVCRDADPongo-- you and I have very different political views, but I have NEVER been offended by your posts or looked on you in a bad light at all. I guess I feel you don't try to push your view (on me at least) or argue in a ridiculous or rude manner. Besides, I think DVC_dad really describes you to a tee! I'm sorry you decided to change your identity.

Yeah, when I first saw this thread my immediate thought was "Oh god, don't close the one by my house! Or the one at the mall. Or the one by work. Or the one by my mom's. Or the one by my in-laws." Closing the rest are ok. As long as I'm never nearby and in need of coffee.

I think the coffee maker was $40 or so, not sure. Works great. Rarely use anything, else.

Well, except in Las Vegas, because the New York/New York Hotel, where we always stay, refuses to put coffee makers in the rooms. If you want some, you have to go downstairs to get it. There are at least two, maybe three, Starbucks in the hotel. I ignore them because like others, I refuse to speak their gibberish. I get mine to go from another restaurant there, where they don't insist on calling a large coffee something stupid.

But apparently that's a big thing for some folks around here. :p

ANYWHO, there happens to be an LPer who is a close friend of mine who cares deeply about coffee...and lemme tell you HIS coffee maker was quite a bit north of $40 (like 10X north maybe). Noisy thing, but damn is the coffee amazing.

I think he still uses starbucks grounds though, or something else of a very decent quality.

    Mmm, good.

    Folgers? Wha?

I'm no snob though, I'll take it where I can get it. If the good stuff isn't available, I'm not above going "to the can". It's just not my first choice.

Besides, as Jerry Seinfeld noted, it's better to get your coffee on the outside (unless you are the LPer who has the most amazing coffee maker on the planet and makes incredible coffee right at home, right there in Connecticut!).

Dumb for you maybe, because that's certainly subjective. I don't think their coffee is all that great. And especially not for the price.
