We were on our way to Tahoe yesterday and stopped at a Starbucks. I thought to myself, shoot I should have checked LP before leaving to see if anyone answered my post ;)

So I am standing in line and I lost my nerve and just went with our standard, Venti and Grande iced coffees. The barista (I think) asked for my order, I then repeated my order to the cashier and paid.
A couple of minutes later the barista then asked me if I wanted extra ice, I asked if it was iced coffee or an iced americano. He said iced coffee, I said no thank you to the extra ice. He then seemed confused, as was I, and he said something about Grande Venti and I had no clue and stood there in my typical Starbucks deer in a headlight pose. He then asked about "room", no thank you, "sweetner", no thank you. He looked at me expectantly.
I smiled. He retreated. I decided to go to the restroom and DH took over the wait. Turned out that the barista thought I ordered a Grande in a Venti cup. I thought I had been shot to Mars.

I love Starbucks. I am determined to prevail!

Try the iced Americano without water, you may like it. I like my dh's with half-n-half, and he orders an iced venti Americano with an extra shot (yes folks, that's 5 shots of espresso), no water, extra ice with room. I would DIE if I drank 5 shots of espresso, but it doesn't affect him.

Yes, I also have a 'coffee maker' at my home, but I buy whole bean coffee and grind it before making a pot.

But fresh Starbucks coffee? Man, that's tasty. No comparison to the canned, already ground Folgers.

What about hotel coffee??? YUCK!!! When we went to Disneyland last month, I asked on LP about the type of coffee used in the hotel at which we were staying. I wanted to know if it was pods or the pour-in type. I was told it was pour-in, so we brought our own Starbucks grounds. We got there to find it was actually the pods, and we had no filters. We tried the pod coffee, and it wasn't good, so my husband made filters out of paper towels and we drank our Starbucks. It was much better!!!

Good. More for me then. As I said, it's all subjective.

Ditto all that. I certainly don't buy Starbucks everyday; if I'm gonna bitch about $4 gas I can't buy $4 coffee everyday. But like Jim I buy whole bean and grind it. Then at work we've got canned stuff; it's a big difference. I buy the whole beans at Costco - even just the Costco brand.

Of course, I read an article once that put it into good perspective; coffee is something like 97% water. Make sure your water is at least decent. If it's not in your area, buy a filter.

About the DLR hotel coffee makers. I hear you. For years we played the guessing game about the hotel coffee makers, for awhile the Grand and PPH had regular 4 cup Mr. Coffee's and you could ask for one at DLH. We would bring our filters and Starbucks grounds. THEN PPH went to PODS! We had the same dilema as you but I didn't think to use the one shot with a filter and grounds :( Since we drive on all vacations I now take my little 4 cupper with us. I have 3 of them because I keep finding one I like better :)

Just realized that this is the first time I have posted more than once in WE! Couple of years ago after one post I was put in my corner fast and never had the nerve to come out until I saw STARBUCKS :)

    You stole my post!!

    LOL

That was exactly what I was going to say. Anyone who buys a $4 cup of coffee everyday has no right to bitch about $4 gas!!

If you buy Folgers French Roast and make it strong you can get a pretty darned good cup of coffee at home.

It always tastes and smells burnt.

I will go out of my way for Peets or the amazing Philz Coffee in San Francisco (made one cup at a time) but the only good thing about Starbucks, imho, is the convenience.

I think this is often overlooked. I don't drink coffee, but I drink tea, and that of course is also mostly water.

NYC tap water is excellent, so my tea at home is good, and at the office we have a Poland Spring cooler/heater, so that's good too. But when I travel I notice a distinct difference. Many places in California have sucky tap water (my original home town being one of them). Really, really awful stuff. And if you make a cup of tea with sucky water, you're going to get sucky tea. I would assume coffee is much the same. I'm also assuming that Starbucks can afford good quality water or at least filters.

So it might not be your grounds - it might be your water.
