I wouldn't be surpsied if it is that low. They have to do a lot of stuff that loads and unloads that vehicle, and it is simply not going to happen in 30 seconds.

It's not that Al is wrong on this. I just found it amusing how you were saying it.

"That's far below demand. And the 15k that do get to ride will have waited in a line that stretches for more than three hours."

Lines were well over an hour. WELL over. Towards the end, it was a quick line, but that's because many people had stopped riding it.

If even two are removed from the "fleet" of eight, that reduces capacity to about 750/800 - about the same as dumbo. At that point they'd likely shut the attraction altogether, rather than try and maintain an active queue for such low capacity.

Very true. Check out the new Your Host Walt Disney DVD set and watch the Kodak Presents Disneyland '59 TV special where the Subs were opened on TV. Everyone in that show were little skinny people, in attractive little clothes. If you were to zap someone from 1959 to Disneyland circa 2006 they would likely fear for their lives at all the giant and obese people waddling around dodging the even bigger people rolling around the park on rented ECV's.

I went over to Tom Sawyer Island recently to see it one last time before it changes to Pirates Lair (assuming Al Lutz was right, of course). I hadn't been over there in years. I went to the restroom and was AMAZED. The doors and stalls and sinks were all wedged in this little narrow space. There is no way a modern day person we would now consider "chunky" could fit comfortably in there. And any moder person morbidly obese enough to be considered "fat" couldn't even fit through the entry. Clearly this was a bathroom designed in 1956 under the assumption that no one would ever drink more than 6 ounces of Coca-Cola in one sitting.

(Youngsters take note; Coca-Cola used to come in small glass bottle that held 6.5 ounces of Coke. That was considered a single serving, and it was a beverage reserved for special occasions like a date at the movies or a refreshing pause during a busy day. You didn't guzzle 50 ounces of it at one time out of small buckets handed to you through a drive-thru window. You can still buy Coke in glass bottles if you look hard on the supermarket shelf, but the glass is thinner now and the bottles now hold 8 ounces instead of 6.5 ounces.)

The submarines will likely be the same way. We are all in for a shock that first time we clamber down into that 1959 ride vehicle, as I bet we've forgotten just how narrow it is and how tiny the seats are. The big'uns of the 21st century may not even be able to make it down into the sub vehicles.
