Avatar was a breathtaking film, and its story woes were greatly exaggerated, IMO.

Star Wars' plot was very archetypal as well, I honestly could see people saying the same thing about Star Wars as they say about Avatar.

I'll start the story off as comparing it to the 3 Lotr movies...as being an example of where the story drives the movie..and work my way down from there. I think what worked for SW Iv-VI for me was the basic nature and simplicity of the story -- what didn't work in I-III was the fact that the story got much more complicated and I really didn't care about many of the characters.

And I also haven't seen Avatar, which is really strange. I'm a huge movie buff, but felt like I was just being manipulated into seeing Avatar. I also don't really think 3D is the way to improve Hollywood's output. Now they think people will pay money as long as the movie's in 3D.

Well, as evidenced by the fact that theater chains are busting their humps to outfit more 3D theaters, and movie makers are putting out a record number of 3D movies in the next year, I'm guessing that yes indeed, people will pay more for a 3D movie. I'm also betting that this will sort itself out in the next few years. Avatar in 3D? Sure. The next Clint Eastwood spaghetti western? Not so much.
