I'd like to think the protests of the Vietnam War era made a difference, but I guess that's still being debated. b. The big-issue protests I've attended since Vietnam (e.g., anti-Gulf War, anti-nuke) don't seem to have had as much effect. I fear that, as a society, we may be too sophisticated, organized, cynical, and media-savvy for a true mass movement to take hold. OTOH, it may be that none of the "big issues" was big enough. c. Some of the smaller-scale protests I've attended have had some succeeded, others not, and most were somewhere in between. It's possible to get city councils, managers of multi-million-dollar (but not billion-dollar) businesses, union officials, boards of education, etc., to at least reflect on their decisions. Sometimes, after reflection, they stick to their previous decisions, but sometimes not. >>4. Does seeing coverage of people marching for/against an issue ever sway your opinion on that issue?<< It can cause me to educate myself further on the issue.
