The prices are crazy. If I can't afford to pay cash for a tree one year, I'll put up an artificial tree... which I will always have as a backup. Since living in Anaheim we've been putting up an artificial tree (about 4 feet) over Thanksgiving weekend. It takes me a few days to decorate with the rest... that's when I do my "spring" cleaning. I like everything to feel fresh for Christmas so I clean as I go... from scrubbing the walls to dusting every nook and cranny. At the very least we always have the tree and lights up over Thanksgiving weekend.

I also worry about how much the vet bill would be if they ate pine needles. My ex was a bah humbug kind of guy so I used to decorate a potted cactus. Even put icicles and all the trimmings. It was kind of cute. So now, thanks to the Wild Boyz, I don't put up a tree, just decorate the house and have a fresh evergreen wreath on the inside of the front door so that I get the Christmas tree smell.

I like to get the entire house done and all cleaned, then we have a tree decorating "party" where I make dessert and eggnog from scratch (fresh nutmeg and coconut rum-yum). I even have a vintage eggnog punchbowl and cups that we use. I like the tree decorating to be an event (unlike the rest of the decorating that often feels overwhelming and/or like a chore). This year, however, I finished nearly all of our decorating by Sunday, including the tree. We had eggnog but weren't interested in dessert. Too full from Thanksgiving, I think. Thankfully, I really enjoyed decorating this year. I think having 2 snowdays and a nice holiday right beforehand helped me not get so stressed out about it.
