I remember this story from 2008. Wonder why it didn't get much play outside far-right sites claiming it was something it wasn't? Because there was no "there" there.

    <a href="http://www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck/was_it_recently_revealed_that_the_us.html" target="_blank">http://www.factcheck.org/askfa..._us.html</a>

"No. Uranium recently shipped from Iraq to Canada was left over from Saddam Hussein's defunct nuclear weapons program and had been in sealed containers, under guard, since the end of the first Gulf War in 1991. Claims that this material is "vindication" for President Bush's WMD claims in 2003 are completely false.

Beyond Investor's Business Daily's editorial, conservative bloggers and chain e-mails have claimed that the Associated Press report proves that President Bush was right in the run-up to the Iraq war when he said Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. One e-mail a reader forwarded to us said this was "vindication for the Bush administration." It's not.

The AP article, published on July 5, said that a large amount of yellowcake uranium was, in fact, sold by Iraq to Canada, as part of a secret mission facilitated by the U.S. But this uranium was known to have been in Iraq following the conclusion of the first Gulf War. It was not "found" in 2003, as the IBD editorial claims. As the AP article said, "There was no evidence of any yellowcake dating from after 1991, [a senior U.S. official] said."

This link shows more on the attempt by the far right to make this into more than it was:

There was no evidence of any yellowcake dating from after 1991, the official said.

U.S. and Iraqi forces have guarded the 23,000-acre site — surrounded by huge sand berms — following a wave of looting after Saddam's fall that included villagers toting away yellowcake storage barrels for use as drinking water cisterns."

This yellowcake is from before 1991, but was finally shipped out of there in 2008 after years of being documented and guarded by the U.N.

OK. Let's follow your theory. Where were the WMDs? Yellowcake by itself doesn't make a WMD. It's not weapons grade. It requires enrichment. Bush claimed there were WMDs -- not the ingredients for some far in the future WMDs. Where were the WMDs? Are you telling me that we went to war and spent a trillion dollars over uranium that wasn't weaponized or even in the process of being weaponized?

This, I can buy. There are tea party groups and there are tea party groups. The trouble is that it's difficult to separate them out. Which ones are racist, which ones are innocently pursuing a racist agenda without intending to, and which ones actually have enough sense to temper their rhetoric with compassion and common sense?

I have much fewer problems with that third group. It sure is dang hard to find them, but like Christians and Muslims and southerners and heiresses, the sensible ones never get shown on TV because they're boring.

Oh it's quite possible entire local chapters would be free of racism. But one need only read the OP or see some of the rally signs to know that that doesn't apply everywhere.

Free from racism? Check out the link, if you dare. Watch the rally over the non-Ground Zero non-mosque.

It's scary. Some poor black fellow wandered into the crowd. Apparently his dark skin led them to think he was a Muslim.

I guess I'm surprised at my own surprise. Just when I think these people can't sink any lower....
