If it's a 4 or 5 it's likely I haven't seen it. A 1 of course means it's the film that should have won. * will indicate what won that year

    1970
    Patton-1*
    Airport-4
    Five Easy Pieces-2
    Love Story-5

    Wow.

Agree with whoever else said LA Confidential was the Best Picture of its year. Flawless filmmaking.

I don't like him as an actor. I have no interest in any of his movies. Just like I avoid Tom Cruise movies, I intentionally avoid movies he's in too. The comment I made was regarding the very end of his speech. As I already said I'm not saying I don't agree with his opinion I just don't think the Oscars is the place for political rants. IN MY OPINION.
Sheesh. If it was any other actor in that movie (Milk) I would have probably seen it. I wasn't trying to turn it into an argument, just giving my opinion.
So sorry if I ticked someone off.>>

    (A) You didn't tick me off. As mele wrote, I was simply disagreeing with you. [PLEASE tell me that World Events is not the only LP section in which that is permitted!]

    (B) I actually appreciate it when the actors/writers/directors/producers get a bit personal/political/edgy. After all, the whole telecast is basically an overblown and self-congratulatory exercise designed to persuade the audience that the movie industry is more important in the overall scheme of things than it really is. (My quintessential example of that would be all the lauditory industry fawning over "Titanic.")

They're MOVIES, for heaven's sake, and for all of the breathless praise thrown at them on the show, most of the time they're just fluffy and/or flawed. More of the same. But occasionally the films are revolutionary, or they do MEAN something. And when someone who was involved in a movie that actually has some substance makes the sort of statement that Sean Penn did [and the writer of the movie did], that legitimizes the whole smug show for me. Comments like his demonstrate that it's not always just about putting on make-up, chewing scenery, selling tickets, and getting placement in magazines. It's about making movies that actually have meaning, that are important -- and then, when you win, saying that you signed onto that film because you wanted to be a part of what it meant.

    (C) Klucky, given your admitted contempt for Sean Penn, it sounds to me as though he could not possibly have said anything that you would have found palatable in his acceptance speech.

    (D) Klucky, we're kindred spirits about Tom Cruise. For YEARS, I avoided seeing his movies. And then... something went horribly wrong. I accidentally saw a movie he was in. And... I liked it. Worse -- gasp! -- I liked him in it. It was horrible.

I still have no use for the man. I still think most of his "acting" is total crap. But fair is fair. He was good in that one film, and I gotta give him that.

I'm another one who wondered where SJP's (Ursula, I'm in the "not a fan" club with you) boobies came from? Actually there were several women who should have left their boobies tucked in a bit more, for instance Goldie Hawn. There is sexy and there is "what the heck?"

Was that film "Born on the 4th of July?" That's one of two I've seen (Magnolia being the other) where I thought he was actually pretty good - which is usually not my opinion.

That said, if people feel differently and dont like him, no worries :). I just think he picks great scripts, GREAT directors and many of his movies are quite good, not all, but many.

No. But thank you for guessing that one. Now I'll watch it.

Nor was it "Magnolia." I didn't like Magnolia or Cruise in it. But that was probably because it was only after I paid my $7.50 to see it that I realized it didn't star Shirley MacLaine and Dolly Parton. ;) (I should give it another shot.)

The Tom Cruise movie I accidentally saw and liked him in was "Minority Report."
