While Philip Pullman has made his disdain for the Catholic Church, and religion in general, known, the connection to the real Church is never made in the book series.

You are still referring to the US. It will be interesting to see how the members of the "Magisterium" are portrayed. I wouldn't be one bit surprised if they dress like Priests and Bishops.

Its from "Tolkien - A Celebration" By Joseph Pierce. Pg 65: In a letter to a Fr. Murray SJ, Tolkien wrote: "Lord of the Rings is of course a fundamentally religious and Catholic work"

On one hand he is a self professed atheist. Yet his best know literary work is not built on the premise that God does not exist, but rather that He does exist, but is a fraud in that He is supposed to be evil. This leads me to wonder just what Mr. Pullman really believes. I can only conclude that he does believe that God exists, but hates Him. Whether he really believes that He is evil, or is slandering (or should I say libel since his accusation is in print?) Him I do not know.

When a group such as the religious right goes on a crusade to ban everything you are about in life, calls you sinful, doomed to hell, genetically deficient, harmful to children, and essentially states you shouldn't even exist, see if feeling that way doesn't seem completely rational after all.

I have a rather jaundiced view of organized religion and I will not apologize for it. I feel it's responsible for so much pain in the world today, on a grand scale as well as at the personal level. I'm not an atheist, I'm not an agnostic...I don't know what I am, really. I think a personal, spiritual relationship with a higher power is a great thing, in and of itself. But I am sick of the religious right in this country, and I'm no longer complacent about it. I'm fed up, and I've had enough.
