But last night I fell asleep with my iPod playing on one of those radio/alarm clock docks. So it was playing the complete Haunted Mansion ride through. And the part when the ghost pops up from behind the grave screaming, well in the middle of the night, it kind of freaks you out for a bit.

The ENTIRE first half IS scary and unsettling. The ENTIRE first half is pure Claude Coats. No characters, only enviornments, hallways open to more hallways. STOP REWRITING MANSION HISTORY....Even Jason Surrell says the entire first half is Coats based. And the ONLY thing Crump in the Mansion is the designs in the woodwork and the chair in the Endless Hallway. THATS IT.

The Coats (and Sam McKim) "run down" version was rejected by Walt, who wanted only neat 'n tidy structures in Disneyland. He famously said that the ghosts would make the inside scary. >>And the ONLY thing Crump in the Mansion is the designs in the woodwork and the chair in the Endless Hallway. THATS IT.<< NOPE. There are other things here and there. The grandfather clock and the stretching room light sconces, for example. You often complain that people find your posts disagreeable. If you didn't set yourself up as THE final arbiter of all that is correct, you wouldn't invite this kind of scrutiny.

(Or is that a minor element in the HM experience?)

Woman on tightrope over hungry croc. Man in underwear standing on barrel of dynamite. Etc. Each portrait "stretched" to reveal a humorous gag. Even the non-interactive gravestones feature darkly whimsical verse. (Here lies good old Fred. A great big rock fell on his head.)

Every element of the Haunted Mansion had either been proposed by Walt, approved by Walt, or seen by Walt. Walt Disney died before the final decisions were made, so they were made by his close associates. Was it exactly what Walt would have done? Who knows. Was it the case that Walt didn't "have much bearing" on the Mansion? Not at all.

It's unsettling. It makes you think of death. It makes you fear for your safety. Something actually attacks you. Then, tells us that there's nothing to be scared of in death, and that the ghosts are happy, not haunting. Longforgottenhauntedmansion.blogspot.com has a wonderful piece on this. Good reading.

Do I want the AA yeti to be working again? Of course. Am I pissed off at Disney for squabbling about who's going to pay for this? You betcha. But is the roller coaster a worthless pointless attraction because this one figure isn't moving like it should? Of course not.
