The only negative from his vantage point is the limited revenue from merchandise, which he'll have to split with Cameron. I'm not sold on the idea, myself, but it sounds like a characteristically tone-deaf Iger move.

Anyone remember the original haunted mansion gates that used to have decaying wreathes hanging from them up until 1999 or so? Those used to have fresh flowers like the home was supposed to be a funeral parlour. With the 2007 refurb and the red awning, and rust stains they painted to the house along with the overgrown foliage...yes they try to make the house look scary, yet even with the optional queue you still end the HM with the playful hitchhiking ghosts and the family plots with funny names written into the "cement" blocks. Almost all of the HM is bizarre and wacky. I highly doubt there really are 999 effects in the HM that are supposed to individually represent a happy haunt. These characters in the (again) OPTIONAL queue can fit into the gap of unknown 999 happy haunts. Hell, at DLP the Phantom Manor has a very unspooky cemetery at the exit of the ride. The HM was never meant to be scary once walt began rejected some of claude coates' ideas and went more with marc davis and rolly crump. Even the HM theme song isn't that scary.

Yes, the queue is pretty terrible (it just doesn't fit) but if one can actually skip it and remove it from the ride experience, that's valid. The HM can still be a cohesive, well thought, and immersive experience. ....not fan fiction, that cost way too much money to create.
