Only giving them 90 seconds for each song is a mistake, I think. Too many of the songs had no chance to build and it would be a better test if they did full length 3 or 4 minute songs to see if/how they kept the audience's attention for a full song. That's what they'll have to do in the "real world," after all. Either give them just 2 songs each at this stage, or go to 90 minutes for this week. I think it's almost certain that Syesha goes home tonight. I find myself not caring nearly as much this season. They probably do have the best 3 as the final 3, yet I found myself thinking as I watched last night "Melinda could sing rings around ANY of them."

I thought Syesha's first number was fine, "Fever" was weak, and the Penguin song was fair. But it was, as you wrote, as if the judges had jointly decided in advance to be harsh with her no matter how she performed. (And why did Ryan ask her about the chair ahead of time? Making her explain and justify it BEFORE her performance truly ruined what might have been a nice surprise for the audience.) <<Only giving them 90 seconds for each song is a mistake, I think.>> Absolutely. My initial criticism of Cook last night was that his second and third songs followed the same formula. But then I realized that the 90-second rule pushed him toward that. It was frustrating that the judges penalized the singers for that limitation -- which was imposed by the show itself. They wanted "Beginning, middle, and end?" With convincing storytelling? And a different style for each song? While the singers showcase everything they can do? AND take risks? Uh-uh. That's too much to ask when they only allow 90-second performances. I found it similarly irritating that the judges criticised the singers for the material they performed -- when it was the show's judges and producers who had chosen the material. Bizarre. <<I think it's almost certain that Syesha goes home tonight. I find myself not caring nearly as much this season.>> I found myself not caring about the final order as soon as DredBoi was sent packing. The whole show is predicated on picking THE American Idol. But is there any real consequence to ending up #3 as opposed to #1?

When a song worked, like Cook's did, I wanted more, but they were already over. Bad format. >Yet I think the judges pretty much threw Syesha under the bus because they, like everyone, has become convinced that a David vs. David final is inevitable (and good for ratings?).< I didn't think so. I thought she had the same chances as the others, but didn't come through. She was happier doing the Broadway style thing, which ultimately will serve her career better than being a pop star, IMO. >I found it similarly irritating that the judges criticised the singers for the material they performed -- when it was the show's judges and producers who had chosen the material. Bizarre.< I disagree with this. While they were harsh on the song choices, I think they made it clear who was choosing the songs. In the 2nd round, it was the contestants themselves who chose, and IMO they all chose somewhat poorly. But the 3rd round choices by the producers all sucked bigtime! >Fantasia's performance last night was absoulutely mind numbingly terrible.< I completely agree with this one. And that artificial red hair color? Not at all attractive. She always came on like a tough guy, and I guess that's the image she still wants to cultivate. I'm looking forward to the final. And I agree that it should be more full length songs instead of the 90 second limitation. My vote is for Cook all the way!

None was really strong or really bad. I thought it was pretty much a 3-way tie, yet the judges made it sound like she was far below the other two. It doesn't matter at this point, but I thought it unfair.

The 2 Davids? Personally I think that David A is more in the line of who would be perfect for the the American Idol CD purchasing crowd. Young and younger teens with mom and dad still footing the bill. His voice is beautiful so listening to him wouldn't be terrible for the rest of the family either David C is great but I think may do better without AI. I agree that being the top Idol isn't always the best. Quite a few of the top 6 have done quite well for themselves. I thought Fantasia's performance was hysterical in more ways than one

And Simon nailed it - if he'd performed Billy Jean, he would have rocked the dump. I thought his voice sounded great, but I also think he was overwhelmed by the live crowd. He hinted several times at his mood, and the fact that he was not really competing, just trying to have a good time. And that was the difference - David A. was still competing. I'll be happy if David C. wins, but I don't expect it.

DH and I weren't sure after the first judging if David A was going to make it through the rest of his songs. He seemed fine while singing and then looked unsteady. The rumble thing was annoying but not as much as some of the other goofy stuff they've used. Andrew Loyd Weber on the other hand, smacko, let the kid close his eyes if he wants to, he is singing not acting, sheesh.
