And the cynics would go nuts, absolutely nuts.

It's just like the insistence on the part of many people that Bush, when he said "Mission Accomplished" after taking Baghdad, meant that we had won the entire war. Clearly, the original mission was to take the city of Baghdad and force Hussein into hiding. Which was accomplished.

Very shortly after, Bush was warning Americans that this war in Iraq was by no means over, and that it would take a long time to change years of dictatorship in Iraq.

It's all a matter of semantics, IMO.

Actually, in the speech he gave on the aircraft carrier, President Bush said: "We have difficult work to do in Iraq. We are bringing order to parts of that country that remain dangerous. We are pursuing and finding leaders of the old regime, who will be held to account for their crimes. We have begun the search for hidden chemical and biological weapons, and already know of hundreds of sites that will be investigated. We are helping to rebuild Iraq, where the dictator built palaces for himself, instead of hospitals and schools. And we will stand with the new leaders of Iraq as they establish a government of, by, and for the Iraqi people. The transition from dictatorship to democracy will take time, but it is worth every effort. Our coalition will stay until our work is done."

It's the same semantic alchemy that turned Bush's statements clearly reflecting conventional wisdom into outright lies.

He wanted this war. He didn't want any information that would divert us from that path, and he didn't want to share any information that would "confuse" us.
