I thought it was green or sage.. and I thought she looked very classy in it. Not too much at all. There were a couple dresses that just seemed to make you wonder if they were fit proper but for the most part very classy.. very old hollywood nice! George Clooney (and I'm not fangirl) was a class act too.. I also thought the Robert Altman thing was pretty good. I've seen Shortcuts and Prete a Porter and a few others (not all of course!) but my absolute fave film of his was Cookie's Fortune! The fact that Lily Tomlin and Meryl Streep were able to do that dialogue live and not flub it all was amazing! =) I actually haven't seen any of the best movie nominies so I was worried that other than the Jon Stewart monologue I wouldn't enjoy it, but I did! I actually want to netflix all the films I've been missing this last year. I wasn't keen to see them really (we've only really seen Disney movies at the theatre.. ) but the show actually made me want to see them more. Oh and Itzhak Perlman! omg.. love him I got to see him at a free summer concert in Philadelphia many years ago and felt so honored then, so was glad to see him honoring the film scores with his playing. =) Ok I'm gushing so I'll stop.

I got the feeling he wanted to play it safe .. and stay away from some "obvious" cracks to the times.

Anyway, I was happy and yes, shocked that "Crash" won for best picture. I think a lot of people were--including the filmmakers and cast of the movie. They all had these gasps like, "Wow, we just beat BrokeBack Mountain." I seen them both and liked them both just the same. Yeah, crash gets slammed alot since so much of its subject matter seems 'tired' and in-your-face about racism. I agree with some of it to a degree, but as a Black boy from L.A., I'm sorry, but it still resonates and more relatable than a bunch of gay cowboys in 1960's Wyoming. Like I said Broke Back Mountain is a great film and I certianly assumed it would win like everyone else did, but its not a film I would want to sit and watch over and over again. Crash is something I've seen several times (mainly from my bootleg DVD I got in Thailand for $2 ;D), but it DOES have an impact no matter how sloppy the screenplay seems to be at times. Anyway, whichever one won would've been fine in my book. It does remind me of the Shakespear in Love Versus Saving Private Ryan showdown. Everyone KNEW Private Ryan would get it, especially after the director winning the award for it, but shocked everyone and completely went the other way. Of course, I wonder how many people talk about Shakespear in Love today versus Ryan? I saw Shakespear once and that was it. Ryan is something that is still discussed today. Anyway, it was a good show even though I didn't catch it all. Oh yeah, Ang Lee is the MAN right now here in Hong Kong. LOL, he's been on every newscast here and there been interviews of him for the last few days. Hong Kong is sending out their love Ang Lee, that's all I got to say. Also, 3-6 Mafia winning an Oscar??? Wow, back in Compton where I'm from, I'm sure that's what people are REALLY talking about . Congrats yall!!!

See, I think it's a matter of taste. I thought Private Ryan was a terrible film with an awesome first 20 minutes. Shakespeare in Love was a better film, but of course quality doesn't -really- matter when it comes to the Oscars. I think the reason it won was because it was a typical Hollywood story (Hollywood loves stories about itself) dressed up in pretty period costumes. Throw in Miramax's relentless politicking, and Shakespeare was a shoe-in. I thought Crash was one of the worst movies I saw last year. Sophomoric and phony. There have been many interesting movies dealing with race and racism. Crash felt like it was made by an NYU film student. And by the way, I'm not at all surprised that a documentary outgrossed all the films nominated combined. Besides the fact that critically acclaimed films rarely dominate the box office, our society has firmly become obssessed with reality entertainment. And that's what documentaries are: reality tv on a big screen. It was unheard of a decade ago for documentaries to make ANY money. That's no longer the case, and Penguins success is a logical progression of the popularity of reality stuff.

FWIW, I loved Crash. I thought about Crash for weeks, months after I saw it. I was really moved by Crash. Mr. Trails and I reluctantly rented it; nothing else was available; but, boy am I glad we did. It started off awful, to me, but, I really got into it.

Having only seen one of the pictures up for best picture, I had to guess and I thought Brokeback would lose because it was over-hyped -- and sure enough. The voters don't like to be told the winner is a forgone conclusion before they fill out their ballots. Liked John Stewart and think he'll only get better. The only network on the air this morning saying he blew it is Fox, which is funny. Please please let's get some better songs nominated in the next year. Hated all three of them. Wish they had given it to Dolly as a sentimental choice.
