I just watched Crash this weekend, so I could see the two leading best picture contenders before watching the Oscars. My fist impression was definately that it felt over the top - I was wondering what the point was in having such blatently racist characters, does anyone out there feel that this sort of thinking is okay? But as the movie goes on it does start to present some different sides to the stories, and makes you think about why racism exists. Aside from some sloppy writing (Matt Dillon's character just happens to have to save the woman he molested) it was a good film. I'm not so sure I would call it the best film of the year, but since I found Brokeback a little too slow and pokey for my tastes, I could go either way.

Jon Stewart was funny as always. The show was entertaining. I was less bored than I have been in the past.

One moment I thought was odd - in the montage of film clips from movies that were "about important issues" like AIDS, racism, etc. they actually showed a clip from "The Day After Tomorrow" addressing global warming. That movie should not have been in that group.

They mentioned several times that we should see movies in the theater - sure, but start making better movies. The five films nominated for best picture are hardly representative of all the garbage out there.

The only odd dress I thought was Charlize Theron's: Is that a bow on your shoulder or did you grow another head?

We didn't see any of the nominated movies. We tend to see the action/comedy/family movies so we didn't think that we'd be too interested in the show this year. What we did see of it was pretty good.

I thought Reese Witherspoons (sp) acceptance speech was very classy.

The music during the acceptance speeches was really annoying.

Not letting the 2nd guy who won for best picture at least say thank you really bothered me. I blame the first guy for hogging the time but come on at least a moment over for the 2nd guy.

The lady who won for best screen play looked ticked off or bored.

Wow, Crash was one of the best movies I have EVER seen and I truly think it deserved to win! I saw it in theatres, and was just blown away by how powerful it was.

I haven't seen Syriana, but I'm very happy George Clooney won. He is a very classy actor who has come a long way, and he deserved an Oscar.

I saw Walk the Line, and while it was a decent movie, I thought Reese Witherspoon did a phenomenal job, and deserved to win for best actress. I didn't see Capote, so I can't comment on Philip Seymour Hoffman.

I thought Jon Stewart did a pretty good job as host. Not an outstanding job, but he held his own.

What was with Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves going together? Did they go together because they were presenting together? Seeing them together reminded me of Speed. Have they been in anything else together? And is she pregnant like people keep speculating?

I only caught bits of the show last night, but Stewart did seem better than Rock. But the problem with Rock hosting the Oscars is he has to be reigned in. Rock is at his funniest when he can say what he wants without being censored.

As for the major winners I've only seen Walk the Line and Crash. I liked Walk the Line and the performances were very good. Crash was a very good film, but I preferred Batman Begins, Cinderella Man, Revenge of the Sith, Harry Potter and King Kong. I guess my tastes tend to lean towards more popcorny mainstream fair. With the exception of a movie like Cinderella Man, we probably won't see the other movies I listed considered for a Best Picture nominee. I think the academy giving Return of the King best picture was kind of all encompassing Oscar for the types of films I like, the action-adventure, fantasy, sci-fi type.

I couldn't disagree more. It's the only movie of 2005 that stuck with me at all.

That makes sense then. I was thinking Hollywood is on their own calendar. Kind of like how the summer movie season tends to start in February. ;)

I agree, that bothered me as well.

I thought Jon Stewart did a good job. He was certainly more comfortable as the night went on. The opening monologue was uncomfortable to watch. I enjoyed it but the jokes seemed to fall flat in the room. A collection of coprses have more of a pulse than that audience.

One of my favorite moments of the night was when Stewart pointed offstage to the 3-6 Mafia and asked the audience, who presumably really care about the Academy Awards, why were the rappers the most excited people in the room and that's how you accept an Academy Award.
    Well done.

Jessica Alba looked good too, but OMG she has gotten way too skinny! If she turned sideways, I think she may have dissapeared...

I noticed a lot of the women either (like was said earlier) had not brushed their hair or were trying to look like they were 16...

I was delightfully surprised to see Crash win... I was expecting BBM... That took some of the pain away from not seeing Keira Knightley win best actress (I don't like Reese, so I was pulling for Keira)... :)

Maybe it's just me because I went to the CAS Awards last Saturday and this Saturday I had the MPSE's. I am so awarded-out I really wanted the Oscars to stand out, but the CAS awards beat the Oscars hands-down!

And my gown from Saturday night HAD seam pockets. Why? I dunno. It was hard to keep my hands out once I found them.

My guess about best picture is that Brokeback wasn't the best received movie on the technical ends. The people that I work with who vote said the sound was awful and that dialogue could have been mixed better. The music people said the same for the music cues. Maybe there were other issues in other fields...? So, even though you might have thought it was good overall, it did not encompass the best of the best in all categories. That's my theory, at least. It had ZERO to do with the theme of the movie.

AND DAVEWASBALOO: "I can't believe that Nick Park rubbish beat Corpse Bride and Howl's Moving Castle - unbelievable."

Those are fighting words, my friend. :) You should know that Nick Park is the darling of the Oscars by now!

And I loved the penguin guys who came with penguins on stage.
