I haven't seen "Crash" yet, and this is speculation, but FWIW... Based on reviews, I'm guessing that "Brokeback Mountain" was the better movie. My theory is that it was too gay to win Best Picture. Remember Jon Stewart's punchline-less joke about how Hollywood is viewed by the rest of the country as a den of liberal, hedonistic, sexual wickedness? That charge has been bandied about a lot since the conservatives were embolded by Bush's election. My guess is that Hollywood, the industry, is sensitive to that potentially business-hurting charge. I think they really liked "Brokeback" but couldn't bring themselves to let it win. Ergo, the Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay but not best pic. Giving it Best Picture would have been too risky, so they compromised. "We can't have the gay film win. So let's give Best Picture to the film that has the ever-so-noble message that racism is bad. That'll look good. It wasn't the most subtle or artful film, but it was competent. But we'll definitely give Ang and Larry the Directing and Writing awards." I'm not given to making quick charges of discrimination based on sexual orientation. But I think that's what this was.

I was just not a very good film, and really never should have been nominated at all.

Oh, Mods... theunion, and thelegion of other names by which you're known... The fact that you cannot allow a positive comment about "Brokeback Mountain" go unchallenged, and that you go to such lengths to reinvent yourself so that you can make your uninformed posts, indicates that you've got some real issues. Get in touch with the inner you.

Oh and as far as my name that seems to upset you it's the name I use on all web pages and have for years.

It was refreshing though to see that most people in the industry think it was due to the timing and "pop culture" of it and not any intolerance that stopped it from winning. It's not fact, but it'd be nice to see it proven that prejudice wasn't a factor.
