Top Five (and Not in a Good Way) What the ... Moments during my recent visit to Disneyland

    5. Puffs of air come at you on Midway Mania. That's fine but one puff hit me so hard I felt like I'd just been punched in the eye. Punched in the eye on a Disney ride. What the ...

    4. After World of Color, we were directed out along a path that took you through the Grizzly Peak area. We passed a big waterfall I'd enjoyed earlier in the day. And it was off. They'd turned it off. While guests were still in the park and being sent right past it. Why not just let us see Mickey take his head off for a smoke break while you're at it.

    3. Because of grad night, Magic Morning early entry was on Wednesday instead of Thursday. We found this out, you guessed it, Thursday morning. No signs. Nothing on the web. Nothing on the calendar. Nothing. We arrived at 7:20 for a rope drop at 9:00. We never got to use any early entry option.

    2. My son, who just finished his first year of trumpet, and I watched a jazz band in New Orleans Square for five or six songs. Another father and son were there even longer. And the musicians tossed beads to this girl passing by. And that woman passing by. Again and again. But not once did they acknowledge the existence of the four males pretty much watching their whole set. Really? in 2012? Maybe that's the way the drunk guys on Bourbon Street do it. But maybe Disneyland needs to be a little more inclusive.

    1. World of Color was fine. Show Disney videos on a spray of water. Fine. Include a way too long ad for the newest Pirate movie. Fine. But ... We stood in the wet area. We had our hoods up. We got misted a lot. It was fun. Then, during Pirates, it was like someone turned a hose on us full blast for half a minute. From mist to complete drenching. Why did they do that?

    and a bonus

May I suggest Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln be renamed Great Moment with Mr. Lincoln. After a preshow that lasted approximately one day and a roughly two hour show that seemed determined to use every piece of footage from every incarnation of the show since the World's Fair, we got to see Mr. Lincoln for I think about forty five seconds. And now, Walt Disney is proud to ... etc. ... Liberty, something, liberty ... That's it? A half hour or so of video footage and a minute or so of Lincoln. What happened? Did the audio animatronics unionize?

    1. Vern invited my two youngest to sit beside him on the Omnibus and included our 7 year old in his spiel repeatedly.

    2. One morning we went to Toon Town early, and my two youngest, who had never ridden or even known of Gadget's Go Coaster, rode it three times before the line got sort of long.

    3. Older kids - 10ish - leaving their cars after Tuck and Roll's Drive em Buggies would slide across the slick surface of the ride - thus showing that there is good in everything.

    4. The Dapper Dans are awesome. Or as my 9 year old put it "Almost as funny as Genie." (We'd seen Aladdin at DCA the previous day.)

    5. Our very squeamish 9 year old rode Big Thunder once and Splash Mountain twice. This is a kid who had to stop to think about Gadget's Go Coaster. It took much, much cajoling and reassuring. But he did it. And he loved both. He was so proud of himself. He'd say "I can't believe I went on Splash Mountain" for two days.
