I have had a horrible, rotten, no good, very bad day. We had to have our beloved kitty put down this afternoon and it has been very painful. Incidentally, his name is Crybaby. He is already missed... more than you can imagine. :(

This has been one of the hardest days of my life. about 8 years ago Tinkeroon saved the next door neighbors year old kitty. He was a skinny little thing that was always getting beat up by 3 alpha Tom's that lived in the neighborhood. His owner never fed him nor cared for him. We would frequently let him come into our house and get a bite to eat. It wasn't uncommon for me to let him in the house at about 6:00am and put him out when we went to bed at night. He was very timid about being outside because of the 3 alpha males. One day he showed up on our doorstep, we hadn't seem him for a couple of days. His tail was half cut off and infected and he was running a high fever. He could barely even stand. Tinkeroon snatched him up and ran him down to the local Vet. They were able to save his life but had to amputate all but 3 inches of his beautiful, long tail. I was furious as I knew that his owners had to have been aware of the cat's condition and did nothing. The resulting conversation with the guy who lived next door wasn't my best moment but the end result was that I told him that the cat was no longer his, it was ours. Behind a mostly closed door this 6 ft 270 lb gentleman said rather meekly, "Okay".

Tinkeroon and I have owned quite a few cats over the course of our 33 year marriage and we have loved them all but not the way we loved this one. He was much more than a pet. He loved being with us and would often just look at us with big adoring eyes. He had the best temperament and the loudest purr that I have ever heard. He always had a way of making us feel loved. He was also the smartest cat I have ever known. If he wanted Tinkeroon to get up in the morning he would come up and purr in her ear, if that didn't work he might gently nibble on her hand, if that still didn't work he would turn on her clock radio. He would lead her into the kitchen and open the cabinet door where his favorite brush was. You could also set a clock by the way he would *demand* his evening can of wet food at exactly 8:30. He was also a master of the "cute pose" and he won our hearts is many more ways than I could ever relate here. We loved every moment we spent with him and he always made us feel loved.

Sadly, about a week or so ago, we noticed that we didn't seem to be as active as he normally was. We would find him spending most of the day at his favorite spot on our bed. (yes, he slept with us too). We also noticed that he had stopped eating (his favorite activity) and wasn't even drinking water. Tinkeroon took him back to the Vet and after $550.00 worth of tests said that the results were non-conclusive but she felt it was a good possibility that he had cancer. She offered to make an appointment for us to take him to Davis where more extensive tests could be run but she warned us that the cost of the tests would be in the thousands and if he did have cancer, there would still be nothing we could do for him. His condition worsened over the week-end and we had him put to sleep today. I know I cried more today than I did when my parents passed and Tinkeroon took it even harder. This thread seems appropriate to give him a fitting eulogy, his name was "Crybaby".

What was it about him that set him apart from the others? I couldn't name it. Just that invisible something that drew us to him. Whatever it was, we both felt it. He was meant to be in our lives and we just loved him to pieces.
