Seriously, the guy had no final consonants at all ("Goi' rou' the wur' in a pi'u' truuuuuuu" - and that was one of the clearer lines. I KNOW this song and still couldn't hear the lyrics), and Simon's "you could have been singing in Norwegian" comment was both funny and true. Still, the judges and he both commented that country was his forte, which instantly netted him a zillion country fan votes (who don't have another horse this year). Plus, let's face it, that smile of his will net him a zillion more.

Allison: Blame it On Your Heart. Kudos for picking Patty Loveless, first of all. And she did a fine job. Going this early is dangerous, but the rocker chick actually put in some twang without sounding forced.

Kris: To Make You Feel My Love. I liked that he stripped it down and just SANG it, which is what this song requires. And he sang it really well. I was afraid the judges would rate it "boring" for its simplicity, but luckily they didn't.

Lil: Independence Day. I was hoping she would have the smarts (or some staffer would have the smarts and country knowledge to suggest) she sing something like "You Don't Know Me." Independence Day must have seemed like a good idea because it has that typically big chorus Martina M. must have written into her contract, but the thing about this song is you have to hear ALL the verses to really get what it's about, and you can't do that in the 90-120 seconds they allot you at this stage. As a result, it was unfocused, she didn't connect with the lyric, and Lil just has to hope she has enough residual good will that the voters will have her back to show what she CAN do.

Adam: Ring of Fire. I don't know why he didn't just choose a flat out country rocker like "Hell Yeah" (which he could have killed with). Instead, he chose to put his very personal style on a classic, which has great risk and great potential reward... and I think he somehow managed both. I found it worked for about 10 seconds, then laughably didn't work at all for the next 10 (usually when he made some googly eyes at the camera), then worked, then didn't work... it was an admirable attempt to do something with a genre that's not his strong suit, AND it was (as Simon said) indulgent as well. I have no idea how the voters will respond.

If the voters vote off either Lil or Adam, I think the judges would have to seriously consider using their save. But would they use it so early?

Scott: Wild Angels. Like Randy Travis, when I heard Scott's choice, my first reaction was "bad choice." After seeing him perform it, that was still my reaction. He's turning into a bit of a one-trick pony lately, and I don't mean being behind the piano most of the time (as are, of course, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, etc. etc.) I mean he's taking wildly different songs and making them sound too similar. Weakest of the night for me.

Alexis: Jolene. Disappointing for me. Too slow, for one thing. And definitely some pitch trouble. Not a bad choice of song, but she just didn't perform it very well. And performing a classic badly seems to me, having watched a lot of Idol shows now, the single most likely thing to get you booted. I think she's vulnerable.

Danny: Jesus Take The Wheel. Some of the same trouble as Lil, with an iffy verse section and a good chorus. But where he was good he was very good, and he's not going anywhere for quite a while.

Anoop: Always On My Mind. I just didn't like it as well as the judges. Yes, "Anoop is back," as in he sang well enough to be back in the hunt, but it just didn't do that much for me.

Meghan: Walking after Midnight. Gotta give her credit for singing while sick like that. It certainly didn't make me forget Patsy C., but it was passable. Quirky... which is her strong suit... not really my cup of tea, but hey, she was sick...

Matt: So Small. Best of the night for me. Mostly because it was not only well-sung, it was a COHERENT performance. Several of the others, even the better ones, had strong moments, but this was good from start to finish, and most importantly, he connected to the lyric - he didn't look like "oh, we have to sing country this week," he looked like he really connected with the song. Good job.

Should go home: Scott or Anoop.

Will go home: Alexis? Hard call this week - no one was flat-out awful.

Matt and Danny were the best of the night for me.

Meghan did show improvement but I just do not like her quirky voice and how she swings her arms.

In danger tonight I think is Scott (boring) and Michael (only Garth can sing that song).

I kind of liked Adam. Maybe because I was never a Johnny Cash fan, Adam rocking the song didn't sound bad to me.
It was a bit theatrical however :)

Tonight we'll see who has the big fan bases this year. Anyone could go home.

I didn't like how most of the guys were singing girl's songs. Aren't they allowed to sing any George Strait or Brooks and Dunn tunes? (or Randy Travis for that matter...)

I think of Country music as being fun and "boot scootin'" and all of that. Last night, was pretty dreary.

Michael-Oh YEEHAW. Country's about havin' fun. Barf.

Allison: I had forgotten about this song. It's cute. She did a good job. (I probably wouldn't use the word "dope", though. LOL)

Kris: I love the use of this song in the movie "Hope Floats". Kris did a good job...he still kind of bores me.

Lil: This is awful. She can't sing country even though she wants to prove otherwise. I hate the way they are dressing her (or is she dressing herself?) That dress is too formal.

Adam: There are great rock versions of this song...this isn't one of them. Egads, he skeeves me out. I dig guys in make-up but he just misses the mark.

Scott: Wow, better hair actually does make a huge difference but, man, he's just so boring. His music is that dull music that stores play in the background. It's not bad enough to irritate you and make you leave; it also evokes no emotions that might cause you to be rowdy.

Alexis: I hate the way they do her hair for the shows. Too much hairspray; it made her look a lot older tonight. Okay, love this song but am not impressed with her version. She hit a lot of horrible notes. I was also reminded of what Simon said last week...something about how she's not doing as well as she thinks she is doing.

Danny: I hate these kinds of songs. Haha, Randy's face while listening to him botch the lyrics was funny. That white jacket is awful, it's making him look all awkward. He seemed so afraid he was going to forget the lyrics that he didn't connect with them much. The chorus was good.

Anoop: Oh, I love this song. I didn't think it was all *that* great. It was good but not as good as other versions.

Meghan: This is one of my all-time favorite songs. Damn, she really is gorgeous. I just don't like the tone of her voice, it just sounds flat. I can't explain it...it's like on the surface, her voice sounds good but there is nothing under that. She's no Patsy but she was definitely better than some of the others this week. And I like the name Meghan Joy way better than Meghan Corkrey.

Matt: I have to see this guy each week to remember who he is. He did a good job. I have nothing snarky to say. ;-)

I really want to like Michael since he is from Texas, but he just really bores me. He seems like the nicest guy though. I just don't seem him lasting too much longer in this competition.

We need to save her and let her show what she can do in genres that do suit her." Same with Danny and Adam.

And Lil looked like she was genuinely relieved to not be in the bottom three. She looked like "if I can survive country week, I can survive anything."

I hadn't seen the other two sing the night before so I didn't really know if they were bad or good....

I am still annoyed with Adam and his version of Ring of Fire. I think the guy can really sing and while I can see making something your own - the idea was to stretch yourself into a genre that you wouldn't normally go. Not sure how the songs or artists are picked - but unless he was handed that song and told to sing it, he could have found something to fit his style. The members of the Opry don't all have that twang anymore!

Scott is an amazing musicain and since many "stars" come on to American Idol and say they watch it - I am guessing he will find a mentor in someone like Billy Joel or Elton John... Scott is definately a young Piano Man.
