Over the years, lots of pale people have performed extremely popular covers of Motown hits. Off the top of my head... The Beatles. Linda Ronstadt. Phil Collins. [You can't get much whiter than Phil Collins!] Yes, the stable of artists at Motown was all black. Yes, some Motown songs were topical to the black experience ("Eve of Destruction," "Love Child," "Living for The City," off the top of my head). But for the most part, Motown hits were raceless. They were superbly penned pop songs dealing with universal emotions. And they were not performed with any obvious gospel or soul influence. Many people equate 60's/70's "soul" with Motown. No, no, no. Aretha Franklin, a Motor City resident, will tell you that Motown ain't Soul, thankyouverymuch. She never recorded on the label. [But she will also put on a huge hat and stand in front of any available camera to insist that the Motown Museum get additional funding, godblessherverymuch.] Nor did Tina Turner or most of the black artists of the day record for Motown. There was nothing exclusively black about most Motown hits. They were just exquisitely crafted pop songs that happened to be created and recorded by black people.

Actually, I was even wronger than that to say that all Motown artists were black. Over the years, a small handful of white artists WERE released on the Motown label. Kiki Dee might be the most well known. Oops. Good catch, vbdad!

Even Simon liked it! I just may have to go to itunes and download that one, too!
