I thought Melinda Doolittle was hands-down the most gifted vocalist AI has ever seen. Not just the voice itself, but her ability to interpret a lyric puts nearly everyone else who has ever been on that show to shame. At this point in season 6 I thought it was self-evident she would walk away with the thing.

But she ended up being third. The voters ended up favoring Jordin and Blake, both talented, but nowhere near her league, IMO. Why? Was it that she was less than conventionally beautiful? Did she come off as slightly "old" to the tweens? Who knows. But I was shocked when she was voted off.

Something says to me that Danny may have slightly broader appeal than Adam. Not that Adam won't be one of the last few standing, or that he won't have a good career coming out of this (I think he'll do both), but when push comes to shove, I just get the vibe than Danny appeals to more demographics, i.e. voters. But who knows - that's why we watch the show.

Having just seen this week's episode, I think I can safely offer these reactions...

-- WHERE WAS THE DISCO?!?!?! This was "Disco Week!" I was SO primed to boogie in my recliner! But alas. This week ended up being (almost) all about taking disco songs and making them non-disco songs. BOO!!!

-- Does Donna Summer rule OR WHAT?!

-- Dabob, I bow before you. I think you already know what respect I have for you. Tonight, during AI, that grew even further. You saw something in Allison I failed to see. She's not a karaoke singer.

That song (by the original artist) won a Grammy for "Best Rock Performance." I have always hated that. It was NOT a "rock" song as originally recorded. It's not that I thought the artist didn't deserve a Grammy for it; it's that I was disappointed in the Grammy-givers for pretending it was a rock song. Wrong category.

But tonight Allison made it a rock song. VERY cool!

But TWO people are going home this week!

IMHO, it should be Lil and... uhh... not Adam. ...not Allison. ...maybe glasses-boy. But not Anoop.

I think they all were just trying to make it their own and all stayed away from the original versions. Pity.

I was really expecting Adam to take this and run with it, but again, wasn't wowed by his performance. It was good, no doubt about that.

Bottom three: Lil, Anoop and Matt

I wasn't particularly a fan of disco at the time, but over time I miss it and would have enjoyed seeing it done like disco. I really believe most of the audience for this show remembers disco too.

Adam is this season's Daughtry. He doesn't have to win (although he may) to have a career. He will definitely have one. In fact, he might be better off not winning because 19 Entertainment seems to stink at promoting their artists once they have them.

I like Danny and Allison very much and hope they also have good careers ahead. Allison can sing rings around Miley Cyrus, who is sounding more like a bleating goat these days to me. Of those two, I also think Allison has her age as an advantage too. Danny is the only one who really needs to win to have a record deal.

I like all three - I'd be happy with any one of them winning. I was a bit bored with Adam's performance tonight because I prefer it when he lets go and gives a less restrained performance - but he is a very good entertainer.

Someone mentioned Melinda - -I just bought her album and it is lovely. Taylor's new album is also just out and isn't bad. Better than his first.

    LOL!!!

The "problem" with this year is that no one is faltering with their voice. Usually by now there are 2 or 3 obvious winners. Anoop won't make it because he just doesn't have the personality to go with it but he's got a nice voice. Lil needs to do something spectacular and Matt needs to lose the hat.

With two going home tonight, it could be a night of suprises with the judges really regretting using their save already.

After a night at the clubs? Ain't even goin' there!

    :p :p :p

(Thank you, I'll be here all week).

    My take:

Lil: I'm Every Woman. A notch above previous weeks for her, but not the 2 or 3 notches above she needed. She needed to knock it out of the park, but she aped Chaka too closely, and the judges noticed. A few note changes or runs does not constitute "making it your own."

Kris: She Works Hard for the Money. A canny choice (though TDLFAN is quite right; this wasn't a disco song). For once you could actually hear his guitar, and his voice sounded as good as it ever has. He has gained in confidence steadily as well, is probably top 4, and may even outlast Allison (I don't think he's ever been bottom 3, which means he has a fan base that was voting for him even before he got the judges on his side). Probably the best of the night.

Danny: September. Also a stretch to call it Disco, but whatever. There were moments about a third of the way through when his voice took on that husky quality that made me remember why I like this guy. THAT voice I could listen to all day. The final third didn't quite work - Danny can really sing, but still needs work on his "working the crowd charisma" thing.

Allison: Hot Stuff. Another song that was sort of too old for her, but damn if she didn't pull it off. Looks like she's going to go further than any previous Idol "rocker chick," unless you put Kelly Clarkson in that category.

Adam: If I Can't Have You. I could have used more boogie-ing overall last night too, but it was pretty ingenious to turn this into an achy ballad - because the LYRIC can handle it (unlike, say, "Dim All The Lights.") The only thing I didn't like was his insistence on putting in one too-achy trademark stratospheric semi-scream; it seemed like he did it just to show he could, and it would have been better to keep the subtlety going. As a result, I thought he was somewhat overpraised by the judges, although he was easily still in the top tier.

Matt: Staying Alive. I agreed with Simon - okay but not that good. The whole thing kind of had a "trying too hard" vibe.

Anoop: Dim All the Lights. Again I agreed with Simon - okay but not that good. This just didn't work as well as the other disco-into-ballad songs. And Anoop lacks that certain "it" factor, star quality, whatever you want to call it. I agree with the other 3 judges that he sang perfectly well, and that in fact ALL the top 7 are good singers; there are no obvious clunkers left as there often are at this point in the season. But some people have "it" and some don't, and I don't see it in Anoop.

Bottom 3: Lil, Matt, and Anoop. Going home? Could be any of those two, but I'll say Lil and Anoop.
