It's not that I don't support the idea of these events, but I really don't think people should find out about them this way. *LOL*

It would be quite fabulous if Disney could list what special events are going on while you're there, rather than playing the hide and seek game it is now to find out if there is some extra something going on while you're at the resort. The running events, the special days for X group, Grad Nights, etc...

In WDW, all of the races are during times of the year that are traditionally quiet, and they use the races to generate more visits to the resort. DL seems to be taking the opposite approach. Instead of picking weekends that are difficult to plan a vacation for and are usually empty (like the weekend after everybody gets back from winter break), DL's races are now MLK and Labor Day weekends, which are traditionally among the busiest times of the year. I just don't get it.

As for the date change, the other interesting aspect is that with the way the calendar works out, it's the weekend immediately after the WDW Marathon Weekend. While I didn't see a ton of people with the Coast to Coast medals yesterday, I bet there will be far fewer next year!

There were a good thousand tinks running the race though!

When they moved DL Half in September to Labor Day weekend after the first race, I was told Labor Day is their slowest holiday weekend because everyone has already gone home to get ready for school the week before, and with a lot of schools starting before Labor Day now. So they chose that weekend to increase attendance. Not sure about MLK weekend. I find it weird it's so close to the WDW weekend. If it were just a half, like Princess, it's ok, but with the full and Goofy, that's no recovery time.

They need to decrease the size of the corrals, with more waves. Too much congestion in Corral A. A lot of people in A were too slow to be there, it was hard to run around people until mile 5.

Btw, I only saw a few Coast to Coasts, where as in Sept. I saw lots of them!

With Tink so early in the year, it's also possible that many runners were using it as the first leg of their C2C, with the Princess or Wine & Dine for the second. I suspect that there will still be a lot more after the DL1/2, but this race really expanded the options for when to get the C2C.

Really, no Tink on the course?? How weird!!

I really don't understand why they are moving it to MLK weekend. Oh well. I hope to do my first WDW race in a few years and would have to do the Dland Half and not Tink to get C2C. They really aren't thinking...

In a few years, hopefully, they will have more DL options than the two races :)

Disneyland Half is 62% full. I thought it would be a little higher after the race weekend. Maybe after Princess, if runners are using that as part 1 of C2C.

Does anyone know the first year they did the Goofy Challenge? Was it 2005? My friend and I want to do the Goofy race again (and C2C), but we were thinking of waiting until 2015, for a special medal.

(Also, if 2005 was the first race, then 2014 would be the 10th race, which would likely be the milestone, rather than the 10th anniversary of the 1st challenge)

We did Goofy in 2009, but none of our stuff says which annual race it was. I haven't found much info online either :/ I guess we have a few years to figure it out...haha.

How did you train for it? We trained with back to back long runs on the weekend, but I know now everyone does that. I'm curious how other people might have trained for it :)

I was pretty good about running 3 times a week, but I seldom did long runs as long as I was supposed to, and only did one or two of the back-to-backs. There were only one or two weeks scheduled for a huge time commitment (and one of those was Christmas...yah right), so it wasn't too bad on a weekly basis, but the training plan did start really early (I think in June or July).

I don't know the years that the other races started, but this year they had a ton of "15 years" stuff for the Half, and next year is supposed to be 20 years for the full. I guess if you can find what year those races started, you'll have an idea of when they will celebrate Goofy's 10.

I also like how many runners dressed up in costumes and wings. I thought there was much more specators along the route thant the DL 1/2. which I think is great.

DH and son had their own 1/2 marathon that day....trying to get around the course to ChEAR me on in 4 different spots was really challenging, but they did it. Disney really made it difficult to try and get "around" property and leaving after finishing to get to our off property hotel was another problem having to walk all around the block to get to Walnut and then Katella. Next year we'll stay on property.

When are they opening registration up for next year???

I hope so. I just don't want one on yet another holiday weekend. My deluxe AP is blocked for Labor Day plus hotels are super high for the holiday weekend, and the Tink weekend is now in conflict with my local race (the AZ RnR). So come on RunDisney!! Make one available that I can make and not on a holiday/blackout weekend so the $150+ cost is easier to take. ;D

I just find that really, really weird.

Are the long runs similar to the long runs you'd do for a full? Or do they make them longer? I'd like to Goofy one day when my kids are older and I have more time just to X off my bucket list.

When we trained for Goofy, we did the regular full training, but did half the distance on saturday, of what the sunday (regular long run) was. I've seen various schedules. I've used some of Galloways schedules, too, but I didn't for Goofy (but I'd probably recommend it-He has good plans for getting to the finish)

Tink will be moved from the last weekend in January to the second to last weekend, supposedly due to the NAMM convention that takes over Anaheim annually. Looking at a calendar, it kind of makes sense; thinking about the actual logistics of it, it doesn't make any sense.

    >>Are the long runs similar to the long runs you'd do for a full? Or do they make them longer?<<

THe long runs on Sunday (or Saturday if it was a weekend with only one long run) was about what you'd expect for a full. The runs (technically scheduled as walks) on Saturdays were usually about half of that distance. The schedule started very early, so I think that there may have been more long runs than normal, but for the most part it was quite reasonable. There was one weekend that was a little insane, by scheduling 13mi for Saturday and 26mi for Sunday, the weekend before Christmas. Needless to say, I didn't really follow too closely that weekend!

Personally, I really didn't think that the full the day after the half was much worse than the other full I've run (which was in the rain for the first hour). In a way, it helped to be really sore at the start, so by splits were almost completely even the entire time (there was a 20sec variance from my fastest and slowest splits for the full). And somehow, my friend and I who did Goofy were less sore than my 2 friends who just did the full. I don't know if we had just trained better for it (doubtful, knowing what we all did) or what, but it was an unexpected side effect.

    Looking forward to Dopey 2013! : )

I just hope for 2013 that the Kids Race will be done as well as this past one. It was much improved over the Kids Race that they have for the DL 1/2.
