That's like giving candy to a child who has misbehaved or buying a car from a dealer who screwed you over on your last purchase or Bristol Palin telling teens they should keep their clothes on. Bad service always gets a bad tip from me ... and there have been a few instances of no tip at all (with talks to management) when I've had truly horrendous servers.

That's my rationale. The difference between my rationale and your examples is that you can make choices with your examples. I just move on from a server who I will probably never see again and hope that someone like you gets better service.... Oh, and here's the last part of my post for your reading enjoyment.. >>A bad waiter can be an otherwise good waiter having a bad day. Particularly since there are so many cheapskates out there that leave crappy tips no matter what the server does (and of course, vice versa there are people out there who will tip the same generous 20 percent or whatever whether a server does a good job or not). Why do we have a tipping system anyway? It's hardly necessary (Japan has no tipping, and things work just fine..if not even better).

Same thing with servers. On the other hand, when you give an above average tip (25% - 30%) they understand that you liked the service you were given. Just like when you are given a LARGE raise.

You think it was small because your employer was cheap. I waas with you until this one- you are spoiled working for a government entity -- if I got a small raise, I'd likely have a heart attack since we haven't seen much of anything the last 2 years and expect nothing this year. Only those with <5 years service are seeing increased- for vets like me, regardless of performance ( since we're all doing the equiv of 2 jobs from just a few years ago)- it's, "be glad you have ajob" -- by that analogy, I'll take any raise as it's better than no raise

People working service positions take more pride in their work compared to those in the USA. Of course I am generalizing here and speaking about the service industry as a whole, not individual situations and circumstances. I don't agree with the approach that we need to motivate the service workers to provide good service through tipping. I like to use tipping as an acknowledgement and show of appreciation when good service is received.

Servers in Japan earn a reasonable amount of money, thus no need to rely on tips (I doubt the servers in WS are earning above minimum wage, are they?).
