If I'm eating at a buffet, and the server is brining me drinks before the one I already have is empty, and they're not asking me what I'm drinking every single time, and they're accomodating to my kids (i.e. my daughter asks for lemonade, but then changes her mind and wants Sprite, and the server will bring another one right away with no fuss), then yes, we leave something like 10-15%. since it's usually a Disney buffet where we receive this service, 10% is pretty good, considering it's at least $5. HOwever, if they can't remember what I'm drinking, and I have to ASK for more drink, then I usually don't leave more than $2 or so. Also, if they keep the clean plates coming and taking the dirty ones away, without having to be asked (come on, this is their JOB, I shouldn't have to ask them to remove the plates we're obviously done with, and even if they're not sure, just ask!) and they're good with the drinks then it's closer to about 15%.

I did some looking around and found a site that says as of July 07 Goofy's is

    $27.25 for an adult breakfast
    $35.93 for an adult dinner

So I did some math and rounded down and for 2 adults with 15% tip added that comes to

    $8 for breakfast
    $10.65 for dinner

That is WAY too much at a buffet for just getting your drinks refilled.

Assuming it's 7.75% (I'm not sure on this):
    29.00 dinner price
    31.25 dinner w/tax
    35.94 dinner w/tax & tip

so the tip is $4.68 per adult dinner

And, they DO figure the gratuity on food AND sales tax, at least in my experience at Club 33.

I'd say they earn it alot more then the server does. As do the cooks, bus person and dish washers IMO. But it would be odd slipping goofy a 5'er<lol>.

Tax is not 15%. Tax is usually from 7 to 8%. Double it and you're close to 15%.

    Math lesson over.

I didn't know you could do that, either. One of the rudest waitresses I've ever seen was an older lady at Goofy's Kitchen, and I hated the idea that she was automatically getting a tip from everyone (our table included) regardless of her attitude.

    >>I wish we would go to the European way of tipping, where the servers are paid a living wage, and you only tip if you get exceptional service. It isn't required or "expected."<<

That's what we have here, and I much prefer it (although it's what I'm used to, so I suppose I would). I'm not a fan of the automatic tipping, although I think I'm quite a good tipper when dining in the US (probably better than I would be if I lived there, since I don't know what the heck I'm doing!!)

In 1998, all was fine. In 2005 we got dinged an automatic 20% tip for every meal when we used the discount. We didn't even notice it at first. We then found out that a lot of WDW CM's were using the discount and not tipping at all so they had to add this.

We don't mind it as we don't want to be lumped in with the other CMs who don't tip, but some of the service was so bad we had to have it removed.

We do however, allow the automatically billed 20% when the service is awesome and we hand the server extra cash instead of adding it to the credit card bill. We hope this means they get the cash themselves.
