So I did a search and found this lovely description: <<Repeatedly described in most tourist guides as "the worst neighborhood in San Francisco," the Tenderloin thrives despite its bad rap. Sure, there are loads of drug dealers, addicts, prostitutes and mentally unstable street people, but if you can get past that, you'll find it is also one of the city's most exciting and diverse locales.>> Then I found a map which showed me the location of the Tenderloin. And since we took Van Ness (101) right through the city that is exactly where we were!! LOL No wonder I didn't think San Francisco seemed very nice!!

It's a nice Mexican city in the sunshine and a gang infested territory at night. It is also where I worked for those 6 years.

It’s the perfect melting pot city, which is what America is all about. I tend to stay away from the most touristy areas. I don’t like what Fisherman’s Warf has become, except you can’t beat the fresh crab offerings from the sidewalk cafes. I also don’t like Pier 39 much, because it’s all about the tourist and not so much about the real San Francisco. There are a few ‘tourist’ experiences that are better than you’d expect. Do ride a Cable Car from Market Street to the Warf to get that crab cocktail. Golden Gate Park is awesome – the museums are very good and the Japanese Tea Garden is bliss. I think San Francisco’s Chinatown is about the best in the U.S. It’s still authentic, that is, it’s not so much for tourists as much as it is a real Chinese neighborhood with many delights. It was established long before any of the other U.S. Chinatowns you might have visited. Yeah, go right to Grant Avenue and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. The food is fantastic, but you won’t find it at the tourist locations (except for the fresh crab mentioned above. You probably won’t go wrong eating at Chinatown or North Beach (Italian is the specialty there). You should probably see if you can visit with someone who has lived there a while, and won’t take you to the common areas, but will take you to all the hidden treasures The City has to offer. Maybe “El Papa†can give you a tour.
