First, there is something really special about seeing (and hearing) the fireworks so close to you and having everyone standing around in a circle from where the fireworks are taking place. The blasts and the launches, I think, really take people by surprise and make it really personal. Second, I think the variety is great...fire, water, lasers, lights, the globe, the torches, etc. I also think the music is really moving (annoys me when people are talking during the intro). And, there are several places where the fireworks are just overwhelming (and the perimeter shots are great, especially the last one which really sounds like 20 cannons launching all around the lagoon). Of course, Believe and Fantasy in the Sky are both great too but for a different set of reasons.

To be honest, it didn't really set itself apart from the "Fantasy in the Sky" shows in my mind. It's still impressive, and I enjoyed it, but to me it was "just" another example of fireworks over the castle while a Disney medley plays. And I've mentioned it before, but that voice-over from the little kid really bugged me. I thought it was way too maudlin and insincere, the kind of thing that Disney gets a bad rap for. I thought Illuminations felt more like a real "show" with a little more depth to it than just spectacle. I've always been impressed when Disney takes standard stuff like roller-coasters or parades or fireworks show and adds real story-telling elements like pacing and character to them. Like in the electric light parade when the voiceover starts, then says "...the Main Street Electrical Parade," all the lights on the parade route shut off at once and the music builds up to the main melody. With the Illuminations show, having the narrator deliver his opening speech and then "blow out" all the torches around the lagoon, then the music starts and a rocket takes off then explodes -- I just thought that was brilliant. And then ALL of the pyrotechnics are perfectly timed with the music, and the intensity of the show itself follows the music exactly, with everything building up to a huge explosion, then falling back, and building up again. I thought the whole thing was really moving.

The "Illuminations" show did exactly that for me, several times! I'm not saying that the "message" of the show was deeply profound or anything, but seeing everything put together and timed so perfectly just left me open-mouthed and speechless through the whole thing, and I actually had tears in my eyes by the finale.
