I'm thinking if we drive, I'll talk Dave into spending 9 nights down there with the money we'd save over flying. But really, now that I'm not really afraid of flying, it sucks to think of driving 18 hours when it would only take 2-6 hours to fly depending on where we leave from. I would buy the airfare now, but then I'll kick myself if it goes down. hotwire.com says they have their best deals on airfare within 60 days of the travel dates.

We are all so busy otherwise it is one of the few times we are a captive audience. So we enjoy the drive. Each time we stop somewhere along the way to see something new -- a tour ( i.e. Jack Daniels ) - this time it is a place where they have been making home made candy since 1891 -- Schrimpff's in Jefferson , Indiana. Saw it on a food network special - famous for red hots and hard fish shaped candy, right on our way, just off I65 near Louisville. they serve lunch in an old fashioned soda shop etc... Last year since we had the car we used it to drive to St Augustine for a sunrise champagne brunch at a lighthouse..... So much to see and do in America - I figure why fly over it....I do that all the time for work

Do you do all of the driving yourself vbdad55? When we drove down in August 2004, this is how it went. We left at 8 or 9 PM, I drove us down to Virginia. We stopped at a Sheetz for gas and hoagies. We get back on the road, and Dave drives. I literally couldn't fall into a deep sleep because I was afraid he might fall asleep, so I kept waking up and saying "are you OK?" and he would say "yeah, I'm fine." Then after about two hours of that I started saying "Are you OK? Do you want me to drive?" Probably three hours into Dave driving, he says "Yeah, I'm starting to get tired, do you mind drivng?" I was asking out of concern, but I was also asking just to be nice, not thinking he would say yes. So then I think I drove the rest of the way. I don't remember him driving again after that.
