We have to be careful with the numbers here. A great amount of this is licensed merchandise, where Disney collects only a small portion of the retail sale (could be well below 10% in some cases). This is vastly different when compared to cinema box office numbers, where the studio/distributor gets the vast majority of the box office revenue (with the exhibitors making most of their money on concessions).

Flop no, as it made back its production costs.

The ships are owned and operated by WDW Co. hence they count for WDW. Also the ships feed the resorts and parks at WDW - thousands of guests each week are on-property thanks to DCL's success out of FL.

Tony is still around - just not working on anything as far as I know - although I don't have anything to do with him.

Don Goodman is taking early retirement in the fall which has upset me immensely - I know the fanbois are happy to spit vitriol at Don but he is a great smart man. The Company doesn't have anyone that understands real estate and hospitality like Don. He is entirely apolitical unlike virtually of all his peers at WDP&R. I really hoped he would stay and fight for change but it appears that we are losing another committed and dedicated executive - Don loves the product.

Your recollection is entirely wrong - POTC was a goldmine - it shifted POTC-branded product unlike any other live action Disney movie ever. TRON merchandise just hasn't shifted at all which is why the Disney Store is already discounting it.

The question is whether people are enjoying it because it is TRON-themed - I very much doubt that is the case. It is successful because it shamelessly mines the product created last summer and brings an additional nightlife element to a park that has thousands of extra guests lingering around because of World of Color. ElecTRONica's success has little to do with TRON: Legacy.

I don't want TRON inside the parks - I want to see something original for both Tomorrowlands in the US. I just can't see how a TRON-inspired look can work on that existing outdoor infrastructure. Both Disneyland and Magic Kingdom deserve something more inspirational than TRON.

But if WDI is willing to give us something new and unique, I would very much be in favor of that over TRON or any other film franchise!!!

I don't doubt you Lee as you would definitely know best. I just recall seeing (and buying for my son) all of the POTC figures and playsets at ridiculously cut prices at Toys-R-Us not long after the 2nd movie was released where they were apparently trying to just unload them. Obviously, he was an extremely happy kid that Christmas!

The toys definitely didn't sell as well as the apparel lines that is for sure. The sale of Sparrow tees and the wigs etc. were huge though.

Irrespective the TRON toys have been a bust. It was bad enough that Mattel, Hasbro and Thinkway all passed but the current manufacturer really didn't come up with anything inspiring.

I thought the TRON toys were cool -- I especially like the ones that appear to talk -- but they all seemed too expensive $39.95 for an action figure is pricey!

Agreed. I'd love to see the look adapted for EPCOT. But with plants. LOL.

And yeah, TRON toys were VERY cool (moving faces!) but far to expensive.

They sure didn't make that mistake twice.

And I don't see the creative talent at WDI coming up with it. They're turning into a version of the live entertainment folks. Constantly producing rehashes of other folks creative efforts.
