"Irritate the press" isn't some parlour game. This is the highest office in the land.

If we're to believe Palin is ready for this assignment at a moment's notice, why the games? I think I know the answer, and it's an answer that "irritates" the GOP faithful: She ain't ready.

It wouldn't be my choice, but then, I've never run a national campaign for President. I do know that Sarah Palin has managed to dominate press coverage since the time she was named McCain's VP, and poll numbers indicate that it has been much more help than hindrance. Now, I have always been skeptical of polls, although I am just as willing as the next person to cite them.

    >>You truly believe that a potential president should go 4 weeks without addressing questions from the press?<<
No. And Palin hasn't done that, so it's a moot point.

    >>"Irritate the press" isn't some parlour game. This is the highest office in the land.<<
And, sadly, Presidential politics has become little more than a high stakes parlor game. John McCain spent twenty years in Washington deploring the games and engaging in "straight talk." For this, he was routinely shunted aside and mocked by the powerbrokers in both parties. I truly believe it is galling to him that it has taken the political equivalent of stunt casting to finally get this kind of coverage. The minute the press really gets to meet the Woman Behind the Curtain, it will pretty much be over. And McCain and his people know this.

    >>If we're to believe Palin is ready for this assignment at a moment's notice, why the games? I think I know the answer, and it's an answer that "irritates" the GOP faithful: She ain't ready.<<
Ready or not, she's the choice. And tell the truth, how many VPs have been truly "ready" from Day One? As I have said in other trhreads, the VP choice is made to balance the ticket (score one for Palin), and the VP's job is to sit behind the big desk at the Senate and attend funerals for foreign heads of state.

(Unless you'd rather have four more years of VP, Cheney-style...)

Cheney, like him or loathe him, could have stepped in if necessary. Gore also. Quayle? Not so much. GHW Bush? Yes. Mondale? Yes. Rockefeller? Probably. Ford? Yes. Agnew? Probably not. Humphrey? Yes. LBJ? Yes. Nixon? Yes.

So going back 50 years, that's most who could have (and some who did).

    <Ready or not, she's the choice.>

Yes, she is. And whether she's ready is a more than legitimate question.

    On this, we agree.

You know, McCain's speech at the RNC was better in so many ways than Palin's. It struck a presidential tone, and suggested that yes, there IS life after campaigns and we will ahve to unite asa people to face the challenges ahead.

Maybe I am very unusual, but honest to God, that kind of stuff works on me. It gives me hope, makes me feel good about a candidate.

Then it gets back into the petty stuff, the lying claims made in ads, and it is depressing. And as someone who has voted for John McCain in the past, it is beyond depressing that this "stunt" is where we are at. I can't see rewarding that stunt by voting for McCain.

Because if it is really about "Country First" then you don't do such stunts.

And that's the rub. I view the entire Obama phenom as something of a "stunt." Or am I just being cynical?

I can't answer that for you. But as for myself, I see in Obama smarts and the ability to motivate people to put "country first." Do I think he is the most uniquely qualified individual to ever seek the office of the president? No. Did i think questioning his experience was a valid criticism? Yes.

And then came Sarah. Which told me all I need to know about how important (and how genuine) this experience question really is.

I don't see those same abilities in Palin. Perhaps if she answered tough questions, somehow showed she was more than a darling of the far right, and wouldn't be 4 years of diviseness (as we've had with our current creepy VP). But so far, nothing.

There's also the fact that Obama got where he is via millions of people voting for him. Some may see him as a "stunt" or insubstantial, but that's how I felt about Reagan. We're going to elect this former so-so actor our President? Really? He looks good on TV, but... really? But hey, millions of people voted for him.

Not so Palin. She got where she is by being picked by McCain, for the most cynical of reasons, IMO. Yes, she was elected Governor of Alaska (a state with a very iffy track record in who it elects, but there you go) via votes, but on the national stage and being potentially one heartbeat away from the presidency, she got there via selection. Thus I think "stunt" suits her far better than Obama.

    2. So you mean to tell me that MSNBC, CNN, ABC, NBC and CBS are planning a revolt against McCain/Palin? That there won't be fair and accurate reporting on their campaign. Nooo Waaaayy.
