Like vb said, you have to pay yourself first. 401(k)s work well in this regard because he money is deducted from your paycheck and also because its a retirement plan you can't just make withdrawals. Also if your employer offers to match all or part of your contribtion then that's free money.

You can take loans from it, but that is not a good idea, especially if you change jobs evry few years (unpaid balances can become taxable income).

That would be odd since U.S. regulations require all phones now to have "GPS" services. For what it's worth, the location services on phones are usually not GPS -- they use triangulation of the wireless signals from multiple cell towers to calculate a position. That's why the "GPS" services on cell phones are able to work indoors where there is no line of sight to a GPS satellite. I expect the iPhone will have the same location-finding features of every other cell phone on the market considering it is a federal regulation that those features are required in the U.S.

I'm not going to argue. Read this:

Yes, phones can triangulate based on federal requirements, but that doesn't mean you can use it at all.

Which you can on other phones.

It doesn't have GPS capability, it has mapping software, but no way to connect you to where you are on the map.

    For $600. No thanks.

A true GPS phone wouldn't be all that practical unless you always had line of sight to the satellite. I've seen wireless GPS receivers that you can connect to you phone via bluetooth. Those are nice in the car, but not very practical anywhere else. It sounds to me like iPhone geeks are expecting this phone to have unrealistic features that aren't necessary considering that the triangulation method works about as well as you need it to for this sort of thing.

I have a first-generation ipod, only because my spouse thought I'd want to have one, and so it was my major Christmas gift that year. Well, it was fine, and I guess I looked cool with it briefly... until the next generations of ipods came out at half the size and twice the capacity.

    Go figure.

As for the iPhone, I don't think lack of GPS is going to matter much. What DOES concern me is the lack of any tactile "feel". I noticed last night while sending a text message on my phone that I NEVER look at the keys...I feel them, and look at the display as I'm writing to check for any errors (or sometimes I don't look at all). I'm pretty fast.

I can't see people being able to do that with only the touch screen.

Oh yeah, and I have some savings.

But I'm thinking of blowing it all on an extravagant 10 week first class vacation to the South Pacific for me and my whole family.

Or maybe taking it all to Vegas or Macau and betting on black over and over til I'm rich or broke.

Since Uncle Sam will take care of me when I retire anyway...

    :)
