I said I realized that we would have a tough time holding the positions we did it we were coming into the job market today. But we also did many things most University employees do not do. We volunteered to serve on dreadfully boring University committees that got our names in front of people who made a difference. We sought promotions whenever we could. Many people will work at the Univ their entire life, never seek a promotion, and then wonder why they don't make squat. At the Univ no promotions are given on seniority. You have to apply along with anyone else who wants to apply for the job. We made sure we knew the people who could help us in our careers, and did what we could to meet them in social situations. Pretty much what anyone would do who wanted to get ahead in their career. So I don't apologize a bit. We worked our butts off to get where we got. At the same time, I realize that someone starting today might not be able to do what we did. On the other hand, I'm not convinced they couldn't. Young people today just don't put the effort into building their careers that we did. They seem to think that they are just so damned smart their genius will be recognized and they will be promoted. Sorry. Doesn't work like that.

I get depressed sometimes, I don't want to bring a family into existence into squalor yet I don't want to be a dad who's seen as a wallet. Oh to be born with a golden spoon. I wish I was smart, I wish I was handsome. I'm like most. Work, work over time, work two jobs, work full time hours through college. Sacrifice dating (or something else depending on what you choose). It's about all anyone can do with all this Corporate greed.

He just celebrated his 20th year at the company and his title now includes the word Engineer. Nearly everyone he works with has a degree - but he has consistently been promoted over them. Why... because he is willing to put in the work and not complain that it's not what he was hired to do - or it's beneath him to do it. Two weeks ago 600 people were layed off... My DH is still there.

They don't have the same values, the same work ethic, etc., etc. But it just isn't true. Most of my friends have advanced degrees and are now attorneys, MBA's, etc. My masters will be slow-going with everything else going on, but it'll happen. As for building a career, it's a two-way street. Companies make it extremely difficult to do just that these days.

Those folks usually aren’t laid off whether they have a degree or not. The University I work for is looking at massive cuts because of anticipated reduction in tax revenue. My department is still asking me to work as a consultant after I retire. I’ve said I will for a month or two, but after that I REALLY WANT TO RETIRE. Hard work, sooner or later, is usually rewarded.

RT my son is a TA at one University and a Session Prof at another. At one heavily unionised Uni 65% are SPs. This is done no doubt to reduce the costs and at the same time using these new teachers without giving them full employment. I have spoken to professionals and it seems now many companies offer mostly "contract" employment whereas they don't have to pay benefits such as pension and severance pay.

Certainly not Minnesota.

I drove a Ukrainian cherry, a Svetlana model, a few years back but I had 'buyer's remorse'--- I guess they just don't create high quality in that part of the world.
