To clarify, on which "State Universities" I am refering to:

Univeristy of California, San Diego (Bachelors)
    Colorado State University (Masters)

Of the two, the UCSD was the worst (waste wise).

But you guys all get pensions, right? Try getting one of those in a non union job these days. I also seem to recall you saying that until recently your employer paid 100% of your health insurance premiums. I have never seen that in the non unio private sector (including the Fortune 500). You might not be in a Union, but your benefits are very Union like.

    Again, just curious.

    No?

I'm pretty sure I could figure it out off the internets myself, if I had a mind to. Couldn't you?

Any gaps could be easily filled in by paying for some private instruction time from an expert (hardly more than a handful of hours at most, I would think..on any particular subject).

College is an antiquated, pathetic joke these days...full of unmotivated students and "less than state of the art" instructors for the most part.

Time to get with the times on THIS as well, the "education" system is nothing but!

It wasn't a slam, which is why your comment irritated me. I wanted to know what schools he was talking about because I know that in Minnesota waste has been retrenched away through significant budget cuts over the past 6 years. We have definitely had to learn how to do more with less.

Part of it (in my mind) is simple truth. California is in absolutely terrible financial shape, being the one state in the nation (so far) that has gone to DC looking for a bailout. I don't know if the problem is a result of government waste or inadequate taxes. I suspect it is a combination of both. It was not a gratuitous slam, but a comment based on current news.

If our governor had his way, we'd have a budget. We have the most dysfunctional legislature around. Both sides are slaves to ideology, the Republicans in particular. When you have a short fall of $40B plus, you HAVE to raise taxes. Cuts alone won't do the job. But nooooooo.............. the Republicans here won't do it.

When we got out of college, we could have gone anywhere in the US to begin our married life. California, (particularly Southern California) was our 1st choice, with the Gulf Coast of Florida being our 2nd.

My father died just as we finished school in the midwest, and we decided to move back to GA for a brief period of time. We got back home, loved it and never left. With the number of kids we have, we feel that it is a great place to raise them. We will encourage them to go off and live away from us for college. We encourage them to travel and to be exposed to things outside of their fish bowl. For example, my 13 year old went to Athens, the Greek Isles, and Turkey just last Spring, and did so WITHOUT EITHER MY WIFE OR MYSELF. He went with a tour group of 40 or so through his school. He will make his own choice of what he likes and doesn't like someday.

I still feel sometimes that, while I am very happy here, I would have loved Florida as well. I also feel a sense of "Thank God I didn't move to CA."

There is a poster here on LP. She is from CA or at least lived for a long time in CA. She (and I dare not name names, but she is a wonderful person and some may know who I am talking about...) recently had to move to Atlanta on business. She has made it no secret that while she survives here in Atlanta, she isn't super fond of it and she loves it when she can return "home." I get that. I understand it. It doesn't bother me at all. It doesn't offend me that she would rather be back on the west coast. People like what they like, and don't like what they don't like.

My point is, that no matter how hard to try, you can't force people to change their perspective of California or any other place for that matter. SPP, I think it's noble that you love the state so much, and come to her defense quickly. But right or wrong, not all will agree.

I am quite sure that there are plenty of people out there who absolutely HATE Georgia and maybe even dislike all of the deep south. I know that I am wasting my time trying to make someone who was born and raised in Manhattan, think that rural south Georgia is a great place to live. It ain't gonna happen.

When I moved to Nebraska, I used to get kicks out of the impressions people had of Georgia. Many of the questions I would get centered around:
Do you just sit on the front porch drinkin lemonade
Do you spend days watching the grass grow
    Are you in the KKK
Why do they discriminate so badly against black people "down there"
Why is it so segregated "down there"
Are people just a little slower there and a little dumber there or what
    etc...

The first few dozen times I was asked about this sort of thing I was greatly offended. But finally I realized it just is what it is and there is nothing I can do to change someone's perception who has never lived there or who wasn't raised there.

Truth is, it was far worse there when it came to racial division IMHO. At least what I saw in Nebraska, Iowa, S and N Dakota, and Colorado.

I wouldn't get too worked up every time someone says something negative about California. We all live in glass houses.

Well, great that you wrote the long essay, but my "personal" comment stemmed from the fact that RT said "the LAWYER checks in". That I'm an attorney has been occasionally brought up out of the blue around here more so than any other poster's profession in this section whenever someone wants to say something derogatory. The comment about California has since been explained, and I understand it.

Yes, everyone here has opinions and prejudices. Anti-California opinions aren't taken very well here partly because such a large number of posters live in California, or prefer the California Disney parks to the Florida parks.

I've listened to folks talk about how WDW seems to attract a lower class of people than Disneyland. Then I've heard that perhaps they just SEEM to be lower class because they are Southern.

I visit WDW far more often that Disneyland, and I don't find that to be true at all. But I didn't squawk because I figure everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I prefer the overall environment at WDW because most of the people there are on vacation and seem a little more laid back than at DL where a large percentage of folks are day trippers. But then that's just me. I don't expect that everyone will agree.

He has learned all the Advanced Math skills on the Job. He started out as a designer and worked his way up - learning all he needed as he went along. He did do the designing and is now a manager. He works in the Semi-conductor Equipment and Materials area.

It can be done, but I have never met anyone who was able to learn these things on their own. DE's and circuit analysis are pretty tricky stuff.
