In the last 10 years we have seen the rise of "Urban Designer Vinyl Toys" or "Designer Art Toys". These are vinyl toys, that are designed by contemporary pop artists, fashion designers, and graffiti artists. They are created and released in very limited numbers, and they are very expensive. The companies that were producing the toys began doing small versions of the toys (usually 3") and had different artists customize each one, and they sold them as Blind Boxes, and they always include some "chase" figures that are really hard to find. A few years ago, Disney caught on to this movement, and decided that they wanted to make their Brand and characters a little edgy to appeal to the youth of today (15-25 year olds) who might feel that they are too old to enjoy Mickey and Donald merchandise. Disney started with the BLOC28 Brand, which is Mickey Mouse as seen through the eyes of different street/Urban Artists. They started to produce urban clothing and vinyl toys under this brand, which is sold at the Vault 28 stores. Now they have decided to use the iconic mickey mouse character design as a canvas for artists to customize Mickey as they see fit. This is an awesome product by the way, and the $10 price tag is very reasonable for those of us that collect designer vinyl toys. There are companies like KIDROBOT and MINDSTYLE, that produce designer toys if you guys want to find out more info.
