However, they do tend to be less clean than most places. Hey, you are getting what you pay for. I love them. Also, Waffle House is NOT a franchise. Every single store is company owned. Imagine the staffing nightmare, they never close 24 hours 365/yr. Considering that, it is a fairly amazing chain.

How many Waffle House employees can afford to open their own. Obviously some do, but it's a very low number, and the business organization is such that, if an owner wants out, he or she has to sell out back to the corp. It's not a traditional franchise like say McDonald's where I could buy your store. Over 1,500 stores in 25 states, mostly company stores. Even so, anything that is open 24/7 - 365 is a unique challenge. But yes, you are correct, technically.
