It's my firm belief, from what I've seen over the years, that the above statement is usually correct. You have a special situation with your daughter's health, so this would in no way apply to you. It's the same thing as the rare case of a fat guy who really does have a glandular problem, and isn't huge cuz he can't keep away from the cheetos. He's going to get stared at the same way all the other fat guys get stared at, whether it's really his fault or not. Too bad we have to paint all folks with the same brush, but that's human nature.

But you can't imagine how upsetting it is for an active little girl to have people stare at her like she's from another planet because she is sitting in a stroller. The big problem with her I assume, is that she looks healthy and acts healthy. JRA isn't visible from the outside so people just assume she is lazy and I let her be that way.

It was not terribly clear in your initial post that your daughter suffered a medical problem. I had no idea what JRA was until I googled it just now. My sister has severe Rheumatoid Arthritis which started in her late 20's so I have a good idea of what your daughter is going through.

I don't think anyone questions the use of strollers or wheelchairs when there is a medical problem. Our responses have been geared to people with healthy kids, and I don't think the posts have been out of line in any way.

The same goes for the initial post -- everyone just jumped on the bandwagon of lazy kids and not enough exercise, etc. My point is that there are many reasons for using a stroller or wheelchair that may not be obvious to you but make it necessary. Wouldn't it have been better if the question had been answered without all of the judgements thrown in? I too get mad at people in those electric wheelchairs that don't look like they need them but then I stop myself. I don't know why they are using it and I of all people should know better than to judge them.

Yes, there are people who need strollers and also who need ECV's - ( and no you cannot always tell )- but the profiferation of both either tells me many are just too lazy, or else we have a more serious health crisis in this country than anyone is aware of.

Previous arguments have always been my kid is too tired, too cranky...I am not chasing them .... etc etc...

yours is a valid reason and unfortunately you will get looks because of others who abuse the heck out of the strollers.....I can't tell you how many kids I hear whining in the parking lot on arrival because Dad had to park at the end of the aisle and they have to walk ....all the way to the tram....

laziness is an epidemic, kids and adults in this country right now...

..or, ignore the rude comments and keep your daughter where she is the most comfortable. If that's in a stroller, so be it.

    OMG, what an image!

Even with my service dog, I couldn't do the parks without an ECV (severe neuropathy and no fat on the bottoms of my feet, ick). And I'm not overweight and look perfectly fine. I'm always getting "why do you need a service dog" comments. Have you looked into the larger sized strollers made for the purpose of large kid mobility? Your daughter can sit up higher and see more. You can probably rent one from an off-site company that also rents wheelchairs and ecv's.

My advice, anyway, is to just ignore those folks who give the look.
