I would say "Happy Holidays" and "Take advantage of the holiday sales while you're here."

My problem with this issue of "Happy Holidays" versus "Merry Christmas" is who the heck are we not trying to offend.

No one is offended when people say "Merry Christmas" to a non-Christian. In trying to protect the non-offended, you really offend the Christians who might not otherwise care.

I don't like the commercial materalism of the retail "Christmas Holiday" season, but that's the reason for the season.

Everyone at least gives one gift or a Christmas Card. I expect a simple acknowledgement that I'm celebrating the Christmas holiday.

In bringing back Christmas, I guess we are safe from having a "Day of the Dead" Oct 31 holiday and a "Fluffy Bunny" holiday.

I do not think this is universally true. Some non-Christians will not be offended, and some will. I, for one, will be doing any shopping somewhere else because I think it's ridiculous to make it a policy to say Merry Christmas to everyone. I'm Jewish. I don't, nor have I ever, celebrated Christmas. Generally speaking it doesn't offend me to hear it. Especially if it is ACTUALLY Christmas Day. That said, I think they've gone too far in insisting that every customer is to be greeted with Merry Christmas. I am sure Wal*Mart is really going to be reeling from my lack of spending in the store (sarcasm.) But I'll definitely go somewhere else that isn't so insistant that Christmas is the only holiday of import.

The ones that will can go suck concrete and eat a worm.

I'm a nothing. And when someone says merry christmas to me, it is of absolutely no harmful intent and has nothing in it that is offensive.

People get offended at every stinking thing now to the point of utter ridiculousness.

Who cares. For those that do? Tough. Get over it.

So says the Christian who assumes anyone who isn't Christian won't be - or shouldn't be - offended.

The vast, vast majority of my non-Christian friends have no problem with "Merry Christmas". But on occasion, the circumstances or situation will get a bit annoying for them, and I don't really blame them.

And Wal-Mart is the perfect example of that. If they walked into Wal-Mart a few years ago and heard Merry Christmas, they wouldn't care or perhaps even notice. Now that the wacky Right has made such a non-issue an issue, and now that Wal-Mart is essentially threatened into doing it, it'll just be on people's minds when they hear it.

It's ironic: Before this Jesus was just hijacked by the far right for crass commercialism to fatten the pockets of corporations (we all know which political party supports them). Now Jesus is also hijacked to divide people for political gain over a stupid issue. I'm sure that's how he would want it.

"And the Lord spoke unto Peter and said, 'On the occasion of my birth, it is not enough that my followers decorate their dwellings with gaudy lights and cheap plastic crap; lo, they should also argue over the phrase to describe my birth, and marginalize those who do not agree with them. And on the day of my birth, they should forget all about me and give presents of DVDs, videogames, and toys. Indeed, is this not the reason I came to earth to lay down my life for my friends?'"

Would that be O.K. and would you go suck concrete and eat a worm if you were offended? Your post is truly intolerant. Why should I be told to have a Merry Christmas? I don't celebrate it. It's not as if I'd see all of the decorations and sales and think to myself, "Gee, I wonder why all of these decorations are around?!? OH!!! The greeter said Merry Christmas so that MUST be what's going on." We all know it's Christmastime, for crying out loud. Pandering to the majority is not the right thing to do. How about sticking with, "Welcome to Wal*Mart! What can I help you find today?"

Wal-Mart's stance has nothing to do with religion or endorsement of a majority religious view, but has everything to do with encouraging shoppers to spend money on gifts that would otherwise not get bought if Christmas wasn't promoted at all.

Means about the same to me. If someone says something to me to be pleasant or wish me a nice day, then that's what it is, and it is nothing to take offense of.

People who take offense when none is intended is a whining ponce.

    "Your post is truly intolerant."

Your intolerance to my tolerance as to allowing others to greet me how they choose, is galling. And calling me intolerant is ironic. And if you get offended at the words "Merry Christmas," then you need to get a life.

It is revolting how many whiners we have in this country who wouldn't know a serious problem if it grabbed them and dump them into a pit of toxic waste.
