It's a common misconception in the world of real estate that luxury amenities will somehow command luxury prices, but the price is always more dependent on the neighborhood. That's why it's always wise to buy the least expensive model home on the block and not the most expensive. You can doll a place up with granite countertops, fancy moldings, and top of the line appliances to your hearts content, but you're probably only going to get the same price as the guy next door. The hotel business works roughly the same way.

I think the moderates do a good job with its mix of magic and amenities and are by far the best "value" of the Disney properties. At $89 a night I think the values are also overpriced. But that is because I don't really like them. Their style or amenities. But $630 for a garden view at the Grand? That just seems really out of whack. But I know folks that pay $600 for a T-Shirt. Of course its hand spun silk and has a St. Croix label in it. But I think that is crazy too.

But to me that really isn't an issue as I always have a car down there and I like to hit a nice restaurant after I leave the parks. And the Ritz also has 24-hr room service which is important to me if I stay until after the fireworks. And the ONLY Disney hotel that I know that offers that is The Grand Californian.

Then maybe the deluxe resorts could back off their insane prices - even if just "a little" Pipe dreams......I know.

If someone else wants to spend $630 a night on a hotel room, then that's their problem. Disney is charging what people will pay. Hotel rooms here in New Orleans are going to double or triple their rates over the next two weeks because of Mardi Gras. I wouldn't pay $120 a night to stay at a La Quinta, but people will pay it because that's what they're charging and hotels are nearly booked solid.

But I will more than willingly throw tons of money to others that provide quality and a reasonable price for it. I can easily pay Disney prices as $219 a night will surely get a room on-prop, but I am not, under ANY circumstances going to pay $630 a night for a 3 star when I can get a FAR FAR FAR superior 4 Star at 1/3 the price.
